I thought I remember reading somewhere about this volcanic rock stuff that lasts a long time and makes tegu's cages smell really like nothing. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Where could I get some? _________________ 1.0 Argentine B/W Tegu (Dante)

I don't know exactly what you are refering to but I know you can get volcanic rock at most local landscaping/nurseries, but I don't know if I would use rock for a substrate... if that's what you were planning... it won't hold moisture, and being rocks it would be pretty rough on the tegus and they like to burrow... I'd say to go with some good old cypress mulch, if you want a "nicer" look some people mix it with bed-a-beast or something similar. As long as you spot clean your enclosure (pull feces out) daily, then you shouldn't have any problems with a smell... just make sure you spot clean and pull out any uneaten food... _________________ -Art-
Try typing volcanic rock into search - Im almost certain we had a topic on it a while ago, wherein a couple of the rocks were placed in the enclosure with the normal substrate and was supposed to cut down odour. Im with you though really Nero - my tegu enclosure doesnt smell unless he has just pooed in there. Regular spot cleaning is really all there is to it (and the occasional full-scale replacement of substrate).

Thanks Johelian! and yeah I forgot to mention the full changing off all the substrate (i just take that as a given sometimes... even though I know some people don't.) Yeah, it only stinks directly after the feces is deposited until I clean it up... and then the smell dissapates quite quickly as long as you clean it up. _________________ -Art-
