Hey everyone,
Well, I finally got rid of the Black and Gold Columbian and got one of Bert's Argentines. He/She has been out of hibernation about 3 weeks, and eating everything in site.. Came home today, and he is no longer in his cage on the bookshelf... I know other's have lost theirs before, and I have looked in suggested places.. .Still no sign of him.. He is about 16-18 inches long.. and we have a miniature dachsund in the house...
Would putting his cage on the ground, sideways (it opens from the top) possibly lure him out.. We have looked EVERYWHERE.....
Should we put out raw turkey balls in every room, just in his cage, etc.... I have two pre-teen daughters who are terrified...

hey, you aren't retarded... I'm sure everyone has lost an animal at one time or another... and tegus are very smart so yours just figured out how to get out... that's all... I would suggest putting a heat lamp clamped on to something like a foot or two off the ground so if he needs heat it is there (if he finds it) you can try the turkey balls around the house... that might help. Most likely you would know if your dog harmed it because your dog would probably get some lashings or bites/scratches on the face... Plus I don't think your dog would get close enough for it to be able to eat it or anything. I'm sure the tegu will turn up, just make sure all screen windows are in place (if they are open) and be careful when you guys open doors.. keep an eye out(all of you). Also check all closets, couches insides too... and under pillows and mattresses. Check behind your fridge (where the motor sits) tegus like tight dark and usually warm places. but they will go to the tight and dark if warmth is not found. check cabinets clothes on the ground, hampers, under your dryer and behind also the washer. try to find the most tight fitting places in your house, even if you don't think the tegu could fit, you would be surprised... good luck and if I think of anything else, I'll keep you posted, also you keep us posted, _________________ -Art-

no way that happened to you too today... i just got mine today from bert.. i had him in an outside enclosure and i went to check on him and i didnt see him anywhere... so i was really hesitant to lift its hide (upside down tub) because i know youre not supposed to do that but even after i did no sign of him... what do i do?? not only is that $120 out the window, but im also worried about the little guy. i feel like such a bad person hah. what could i possibly do to lure him back if hes still in my back yard? where would he have run off to? im still baffled at how he could have possibly gotten out of its enclosure.. i think its safe to say that IM the retarded one

Hey,
You are not retarded! You know.. Bert keeps his Tegu's outside and the burrow into the ground. Are you sure he did not burrow? Look for new signs of loosened dirt in your backyard. I don't know where you live, but here it has been 80 degrees, so it may be warm enough that yours can't freeze. We have checked underbeds, in mattresses, even in the water bed... Under the dryer, behind the hot water heater, under the stove, in all the closets, in shoes, even in silly places, like the old ice box we have in the kitchen.. I even looked in a cooler..
I've got a heat lamp close to the ground now, with water and turkey balls in four of the rooms so far.. Still no sign of the little fella anywhere..

If you have tiles, inlay, wood floors, etc.. take a bit of flour and sprinkle it in the doorway and walkways. This will allow you to see what rooms he is moving around in. They will sleep a lot and as they become more active they will move around more until one day in the near future they will walk right across the floor in front of you.
Unless you have animals who will eat the little lizard or unless you leave your doors open often, I would assume the animal is hiding inside and he will show up.

Don't loose hope guys, I'm sure they will turn up... I forgot about the flour thing, and that's a good idea, too. Just to let you know, I live in my basement, and my room is a nice temp, but when I got 3 savannah monitors my basement wasn't finished... just my room, so when you walked out my door it was like a 20 degree drop... from like mid 70s to like mid 50s, and I lost all 3 of them, because they were all in the same cage and somehow ( I still don't know to this day because I kept mice and anoles and everything else in that tank and nothing but those monitors got out... and they were gone for like 3-4 weeks... I felt horrible... but there was nothing I could do, they were gone... I looked for probably about 2-3 weeks, and then I just kind of kept an eye out... Also, my dad sprays bug killer in the basement so I figured they would die just by licking out in my basement... so my stupid self put mice in their cage (my breeders) and then one day I looked and saw one little baby monitor in there with the mice, just chillin... I was like ?!?! So then I put him in a new tank and made sure he couldn't escape, and then every day after that they returned one by one... it was extremely nuts... _________________ -Art-

Thought I'd let everyone know we found the little fella on Sunday, he was skinny and shedding, but seems to be okay.. a little cranky, but I would be as well.
We found the little bugger behind a wall locker that my husband brought home from the military. There was just enough space between it and the wall that he was able to curl right up and go undetected. If he hadn't left a present at the back door, we would never have looked behind them.
