hello everyone i've been visiting this site for a while doing research before i finally got my 2 tegus. now that i have em i figured why not join. i ended up gettin a male and female agr blk & wht. i also got quite a few other pets as well. thanks for all the info. it definitely helped me out alot on the purchase of my lil guys. i love em a bunch and want the best of care for em and now i can give them that with the 3 months of research i did before making my purchase (almost all done from this site and links from this site). i do have one question though. im adventally gonna want to breed my tegus and was wondering if raising them the first year of their life without hibernation is ok so they grow quicker and then next year when i would like to breed em hibernate them? i was just wondering if this could cause any complications. thanks alot. _________________ 2.1.0 arg blk & wht tegus, blue tegu

As to your question, the general consensus seems to be most breeders would tend to hibernate their Tegu's each and every year in order to breed, and some would say it's mandatory, however there has to be some Tegu's out there who have skipped a hibernation period and went on to produce young in latter years or they would be irrelevant to the Tegu population in general.
Also sexual maturity seems to be deemed at around 3 years old for hibernated Tegu's, on the flip side others would say that size would play more of a role than age in and of itself for reproduction, So the question may be when are they sexually mature ?
I don't see why skipping hibernation this year to put them size on them, and subsequently hibernating in latter years would hinder their future reproduction, however perhaps they will not be sexually mature to reproduce for you in their 2nd year as you have planned - maybe it will take 2 seasons of hibernation...

thanks that really gives me something to ponder now. i think i have a lil science experiment im gonna try. ive been breeding bearded dragons and timor monitors for a while now and never had troubles when i did that to bulk them up. _________________ 2.1.0 arg blk & wht tegus, blue tegu
