I had a very unique opportunity yesterday. I got to get within 2' (unobstructed) of a Guatemalan Beaded Lizard (Heloderma horridum charlesboerti). This species is near extinction with less than an estimated 200 of them left in the wild. Extinction of this animal in the wild is considered imminent. I can't convey what an honor it was to view this animal first hand with nothing but a little air between us.

You can read information about them here: http://www.ircf.org/projectheloderma/beaded.html

Amazing oppportunity BW...one day when my children are older..I am getting a pair of Heloderma suspectum...I want a pair of banded pinks.
But to have an opportunity to observe an animal near extinction IS an honor--your are correct.
When I was down in GC there were less then 20 left in the wild...headstarting has helped dramatically.
Are there any programs for these guys in the works?

Wow..that is awesome. Where did you come across an opportunity like that? Interesting...at the Daytona show this year they had an article about these lizards on the back of the show program and I believe they also were having an auction after the show to benefit them. And..there is a big article about them in October issue of the Reptiles magazine. Thank goodness for them they are getting quite a bit of exposure. It is a venomous issue. That must have been an honor. When I get my own place and am a little older I would love to have a Gila....

That is a beautiful Species, It is sad to know that there are so few left in the world today. Unfortunatly your expierence is for most is a once in a life time opportunity.
