is it necessary to have vent fans if your housing the tegu in a normal glass tank with a screen cover or is that only really required for a sealed box?
A normal glass aquarium with a screen top will be TOO ventilated. You will have to wet the substrate down every couple days. Most people put plexiglass over most of the top to increase the humidity. Box cages with sliding glass fronts and tiny vents on the side are more ideal.

This is true, but at the same time you need to watch you temps. Without ventilation the temp could get too warm as well from the basking bulb. _________________ www.tegu.com and www.Varnyard-herps-inc.com
sooo do you think having half the tank (its a 55 gal by the way) covered with the mesh screen and half covered by glass would be ok? wetting the bedding every so often isnt a big deal, i have a lot of free time as a college student

Sure, but you need to monitor the temps. The cool side does not need to get over the lower 80s. Also when wetting the substrates be sure not to get them too wet and tacky. If they start sticking to your tegus feet, they are too wet. _________________ www.tegu.com and www.Varnyard-herps-inc.com
