Hello, my name is Paul and I just joined(obviously). I don't own a tegu, but will be buying one over the winter. I have a 2 year old Chinese Water Dragon named Tucker. I love herps and want to try a big lizard. Most likely, I'll be getting an Argentinean B/W, but I also like the blues.
That is a AWESOME looking water dragon. A Tegu will not let you down. Either a B/W or a Blue is a good choice. I have them both. I think my blues are sometimes a little spoiled out of my tegus, probably because my B/W is a stinker. haha. But dont take that as a reason to not get a B/W. Most peoples are amazing, they all have their own personalities and most are very tame. Mine is named Bruce, and for some reason that fits him perfectly. He doesnt like try to bite my hand off or anything, he just is grumpy. haha. I suggest just thinking about your housing options. If you can house a b/w over a blue. Blues needed alot smaller housing. Also your budget, Blues will cost you more. Consider that blues are carnivores, and B/W are omnivores. There are differences between the two, and thats what makes them so great. I love mine both and I would never trade them. I wish you the best of luck with picking out a Tegu. Also, I forgot to add many Black and White babies born in 2006 will be hibernating, but not all. If you cant find a b/w that isnt in hibernation for a decent price, I would suggest paying a little bit more for a blue. Getting a tegu in mid hibernation sucks, I did it before and all I wanted was to see it, but I couldnt!
Looks like I missed the hatch, so I'll have to wait till next summer
Thanks everyone. I've been researching Tegus for awhile. I wanted something big, but that could be tamed down. I was gonna try a monitor, but didn't feel like getting my face bitten off. Taming shouldnt be much of a problem. Tucker is like a little kid. When he gets scarred, he runs over by daddy or he'll fall asleep on me. He usually doesnt fuss when I pick him up, but if he's in his ADD mood, than he'll tail whip till he gets his way.
