I bought a Red Tegu from a third source the other day. It was really hard to locate one. I have owned two large Iguanas that got to be almost 4 feet so I do have some experience with large lizards. I bought this tegu and it just looks amazing, but i have been having trouble determining if it is an Argentine Red Tegu or Peruvian here are some pics if someone can help me out. Also I am not sure how old it is. Its about 1.5 feet I measured it and I am keeping it in a 4 foot long terrarium I am just wondering if anyone can give me a rough estimate on how old it was. I know they like the humidity to be high so I also placed an extra fogger that I had in its habitat. I am also not sure if it’s a male for female. I am trying to tame it, but its being a little difficult and also its just sleeping it digs and sticks its head in the bedding and just sleeps under the heat and uvb lights. The person I bought it from told me that it was about 1 year old ,but this other person told me that it was a couple of years old. Its about 1.5 feet. Can some one please help me out ? here are some pics thanks a lot.!!

well like i said in another post, size is not a good factor to judge age with tegus. a "hibernated" tegu will grow a lot slower than one that isn't. for the taming thing, give your tegu time it will come around, right now since it is new and you are new to it, it just needs to be left alone completely (except water, feeding, and cleaning purposes) for about a week or more. then you might want to try handling the tegu in the cage (little pets here and there or holding) also tegus tame down a lot as they grow in size. If your tegu is burrowed, do not wake it. This will break the trust between you and the tegu. It burrows because it believes this is it's "safe place" and it trys to get away from everything, and if you keep digging it up well then that thought is shot to s**t. anywho, i hope some of that helps, oh, and everyone has their own ways in taming down animals, just search around on the forum, and pick up tips here and there, you will find out what works for you and your tegu. Good luck and congrats on the sweet tegu! -Art- _________________ -Art-

I think people try to give names to the Red tegu as a marketing scheme, and yes it may have been found in a different geographical area other than Argentina, but its kinda like Green Iguanas. Green Iguanas are Green Iguanas, and Red Tegus are Red Tegus. I wouldnt worry about it too much. You have a wonderful looking tegu, and that is all that matters.
