hello guys im getting a leopard gecko this saturday from my local petshop. so far my setup is a 20 gallon tank, one cave at the end of the tank another in the middle of the tank a food dish and a water bowl my beding is indoor outdoor carpeti have a 75 watt nigth ligth in one corner of the tank i was wondering if my setup is appropriete for my new pet and any advice anyone can give me.
my friend who breeds them uses paper towels, until they are aty least 5-6" long, then calcisand, he said they will eat too much sand when they are young. make sure one of your hides is filled with a moist moss or substate of sorts cause they will go in there and shedd and eat the shed and they need the humidity in there for that. i heard if you put reptivite in a cap they will eat it when they need it, i am not sure about the specifics of that though. So long as it hits mid 80's to low 90's on the hot side and lower on the cool side you should be okay... wow that was a lot! l8r

Sounds pretty good to me. You probably wont need the food dish as they are carnivores and crickets and worms wont stay in the dish. Also, I would recommend getting another strip of Indoor/outdoor carpet so you can take the one out to wash and have another one to put in the cage. Dont forget to gut load the insects.
I would turn on the light before hand and make sure it will be the right temp. It is much easier to adjust the temp when you dont have the reptile in it. Less stressful for them too, IMO.
thanx but it semms i bougth a skinny one today how can i get it fat quick
I was thinking that wax worms are high in fat and are usually used to fatten up skinny reptiles. You might want to give them a try. I know my blue tongue skink LOVES them. I only give a couple a week. More as a treat. Good luck and be sure to post pics of it.
guys i gave my new leopard gecko food yesterday and it ate two cricket out of five and today he hasent eaten i have a bowl with some wax worms he hasent touched them wat sould i do the guy in the pet shop said two give it a drop of gatorade cause it makes them hungry is that true
never heard about the gatorade making them hungery. I, personally, would give it say a week or so before I would start to worry. It might just take it a while to get used to his new enclosure. Are the temps and everything correct? I know there are scent attractant sprays out there that are like banana and garlic scents that are supposed to get your reptile eating. I have never used them before. right now I cant think of any other suggestions. Keep us posted with the progress and I will see if I can think of anything else.
true it could be because he hasent gotten use to his new home ill count the crickets and worm and tell u if he ate any yeah the temps are about 90 in one corner and 75 in the other is that ok
just to throw in my 2 cents, i've had my leopard gecko for 13 years, i have used regular 'play-sand' bought at a hardware store her entire life, from a tiny hatchling to today and have had zero issues with impaction. i really think the danger of sand is over-dramatized, but maybe some leos are just sloppier eaters than others. i would personally never pay the ridiculous price they charge for "calci-sand"
of course, if you're not worried about appearance then paper towel is the way to go.
You might want to try a- UTH under one side, put one hide that has no bottom over it, leo's do need belly heat. I've owned and breed leo's for going on 5 years now, love the little things, a few of my girls crawl right up to me and expect to be feed from my hand, I would maybe also suggest a mixed diet of mealworms, then move to super worms as they grow. Crickets and small roaches. I'll show ya some pictures later if you like.

We have had a gecko for four years now... I bought the calcium sand from pet smart as far as food I fed him wax worms, tiny meal worms, and crickets... mine did not eat everyday....but he is a fatty now and loves his bubble bowl. I hope he starts eating for you.
One more thing I always dust the food with calcium... he loves it.
guys thanx for all the tips you guys gave me but unfortunatly he passed away im guessing he wasent the proper care in the petshop before i bougth him wen i asked the manager about a refund he said theirs no refund on reptiles i guess i learned my lesson on chosing healthy reptiles too bad i payed 50 to have it die
wow, are you a kid? cause i tried to get money back for a tegu tha my friend and i purchased for her and the guy gave us the run around cause we are younger.... i had my dad call and he agreed right quick! if you are under 18, get you rents or someone to call the store people think they can push kids around, and are generally suprised when an adult backs them up... good luck and srry bout ur little guy (i love leos)
