I have tons of white mite looking things I've been told are wood lice. How can I get rid of them? If this continues I will no longer be using mulch! So What can I do to get rid of them? What can I do to prevent them? What can I do...... HELP!!!

I dont know if wood lice are different over there but here ours are grey

Is this what the things in your mulch looks like?

A lot of bags of mulch come with little insects in it - my last load came with a stack of peat flies and ants that are getting all over the place icon_sad.gif To get rid of existing ones, remove all traces of mulch, take out any remaining lice and replace with fresh stuff. Perhaps you could air out new mulch, leaving it exposed to the air to let the bugs out - or maybe soak the mulch in hot water to kill them off? You might want to change supplier if youre getting frequent loads of woodlice. Sadly though I think these things are usually inevitable/ icon_sad.gif

one word: microwave oven
Or 2 words: microwave oven or oven icon_smile.gif

The little buggers can't survive that, but it will smell like wet wood in your kitchen for some hours.
Just stick it in for 5 mins (oven at 212 F)

I spoke with Bennett and everything is fine. They don't hurt the tegus. I can't stick the mulch in the oven! That would take hours! I have 40lbs + Per Vision LOL. Anyways....If this ends up creating a problem I may get rid of the mulch all together or figure out some way to get rid of them. For now I'm going to just see where this goes.

How about prevent a mite. That is a spray that I use to kill off parasitic mites in my snake enclosures.

Honestly they have really seemed to disappear. I see them now and then but for the most part I guess they were just checking out their new home. I thought about it and I'd rather not have my tegus burrowing in mulch with a bunch of chemicals in it. I guess I'll just leave them till a problem arises. Thanks for the info though!

Lice in the mulch? Seems pretty sketchy to me? I wouldn't want these pests in my cage. Our home! Did I mention I hate insects?

LOL insects have grown on me and I do like a few especially ones I have no knowledge about. I've wanted to get a few trantulas for awhile now but the ones I want are like $30 for tiny babies and that to me seems like a ton of money for a spider lol. Anyways...I haven't seen any lately...wonder where they went?

$30 is pretty reasonable for some species of Tarantulas. If and when you decide to take the plunge into arachnids feel free to ask my daughter some questions. She keeps 18 Tarantulas, I believe 10 different species. Some of them cost over $100.

Personally, I dislike spiders but will handle a nice calm Rosehair or Flame Leg for educational presentations. The ornamentals scare the heck out of me because they are aggressive, extremely fast, and quite venomous. I do have to admit that they are beautiful and interesting to watch tho.

I think you adopted out my blue male icon_rolleyes.gif . Then again that's probably a good thing as you have a no breeding rule. Anyways I like the larger ones that are pretty popular and common in the trade. The Red knee, Chaco, and Giant white knee are my top 3. The ornamentals are amazing and I'd be to tempted to handle them. I forgot where but there is a lady that does infact handle hers, she has had it from a baby!

Nah, I still have the Blue Tegu. Can't decide whether to keep him or not. And we do make occasional exceptions to our no-breeding clause, depending on the animal in question. icon_smile.gif I'll try to get some new pics of the Tegu in question.

I see! Well I have 2 beautiful girls (one I think is platinum) and no males for them! If infact he was shipped to me I'd have to let you in on babies if you'd like (maybe an albino "wink wink"). Anyways...keep me updated! Seems like females are everywhere and males are hard to find....very odd! I'd LOVE to see some pics!!!
