I was wondering what worms are the best for tegus. Does it matter? I know that different worms can be good for some lizards and bad for others. I will be feeding crickets for sure and work in a few pinkies, but I want to feed too to give a variety. If I feed crickets every day and maybe a pinkie every other day, when should I give the worms? The days I dont give pinkies? Thanks for any help. ~Christie

I feed my current tegu, Tux, a handful of dusted crickets everyday and he eats them all. I feed him these crickets everyday. Every few days I give him 5 or 6 pinkies. On the days I don't feed pinkies I give him 6 to 8 dusted superworms or 20 or so dusted mealworms with his dusted crickets. He is currently 18 1/2 inches. I do not generally feed him a regular diet of fruits or veggies, but I do occassionally give him a taste of banana, grape, etc.

The basic rule of feeding a tegu is to give it what it will eat readily. If you feed it a pinky and it eats it quickly, give it another.. do this until it doesn't take it quickly.. it is getting full and is all done for now.

I hope this helps. I hope others post their feeding habits as well.

Thanks for the info Rick! I always have mealworms and sometimes have supers too. So basically it's just feeding as much as it will eat. It's funny because I've read about tegus only eating like 10-20 crickets a day, which doesnt seem like a lot when you figure my 17 inch bearded dragon will happily eat 50 crickets a day, plus a salad! lol He's a little pig though. I am going to try and come up with a feeding schedule, which I have for my other lizards and hopefully get organized within the next few days!

I would love to hear about others feeding habits too! keep the posts coming everyone icon_smile.gif
