Our 10 year old son's B&W Argentine Tegu "Oreo" is 3 months old and 50 grams. He's had a difficult transition since we got him. My wife feeds him with a syringe and his interest goes back and forth.
He used to sleep alot, but he's been awake much of the day today and basking.
Today he finally moved from the 10G tank he's been living in, to a 75G. It's a little big for him now but he already seems to feel at home. He's either basking (100 degrees) on the warm end or burrowing on the cool end.

He refused to eat anything for the first week and a half after we got him. We took him to a reptile vet, they gave him some meds for possible parasites and suggested stage 1 meat baby foods and activia yogurt (has natural "good" bacteria for digestion). He really likes them. I've been giving him some butter worms every day or so, if he'll eat them. He doesn't like crickets. He ate a pinkie last week, and a piece of strawberry. Today I left him a plate with vanilla Activia yogurt (he really likes that one!), some Tegu bites, chopped up strawberry and a frozen pinky mouse. Hopefully he'll start eating on his own and start growing!
I expect he'll be in the 75G through the summer (until he's about 24" long, he's only 12" now). I've designed a 7' x 4' x 3' enclosure for him. _________________ 1.1.12 Blue Tegus, 1.0 Red Tegu

cute lil guy.
rick, if you read this, is this about how big you ship your babies?
Thanks.
I'm not sure about Rick, but Varnyard ships at 2 weeks old. Ours is 3 months old and I'm sure a bit small. A hatchling is probably 6-8" long, ours is 12" long. _________________ 1.1.12 Blue Tegus, 1.0 Red Tegu

Beautiful little guy. The reason he probably wasn't eating was because he needed time to adjust to his surroundings. _________________ 1.1.0 Bearded Dragons (Damien and Miss Priss)

He's still working on it. So far the only prey he will eat in his own are pinkie mice and they aren't a staple (too much fat and no calcium). He ignores crickets, which aren't much better.
Yesterday of all the stuff left on his plate, he only ate the mouse. He licked the other stuff but it doesn't look like he ate any. Today I left him some yogurt with tegu bites mixed in but I doubt he'll eat any because of eating the pinkie yesterday. We'll have to continue hand feeding him some. I'll leave him a fuzzy this weekend. He doesn't seem to interested in fruits or veggies. He's tried some but will only eat one piece. I'll have to try some boiled egg.
Any other suggestions for a finicky baby?? _________________ 1.1.12 Blue Tegus, 1.0 Red Tegu

Why don't you sprinkle the pinkies with calcium powder? That's what I do with Al....he eats 3 at a time with a healthy amount of calcium powder on them....

I've been leaving him plates with yogurt, baby food, tegu bites & strawberries for the past 3 days (put some pieces of grapes on there today). He hasn't eaten any of it except for the pinkie I put on his plate Monday.
I had a hard time getting him out tonight. He didn't want to come out and once I got him out he was a spazz, trying to get away. He must be a little stressed from his new enclosure and being dug up to feed him.
I managed to get some yogurt and baby food (with vitamins sprinkled in) in him. Tomorrow I'll include a large calcium dusted pinkie on his plate. He's up from 50g to 54g in the last 4 days, probably just the pinkie. _________________ 1.1.12 Blue Tegus, 1.0 Red Tegu

Who sold you him?

My wife bought him from a local pet store (local owned not Petco) who got him through a wholesaler. So, who knows where he came from.
I wanted to buy one from Rick. She insists on nursing this one back to health.
I left him a plate of food this morning including 2 dusted pinkies. _________________ 1.1.12 Blue Tegus, 1.0 Red Tegu

I think that PetShop should of done a better job and making sure the Tegu was in good health and eating before it was sold. *sigh* What can you expect from Petshops these days, Ive only seen 2 petshops in my life time which were good, one is Fred's Pet Center and the other is PetGoods when it 1st started off(now it's horrible but working back up).
Well it's good that your wife saved him and he's in good hands. Are you thinking of getting another once you get this guy up and running?
Did he take his pinks? I actually felt pretty bad this morning, I was going to take out Tigger one last time before the lights went out and he rejected me and went to sleep in his hide lol

These guys are pretty good, but there's no profit in feeding them too well. So they do the bare minimum. The whole problem with him could have been stress related. They said he was eating great for them. We don't know.
We thought about returning him, but she wanted to get him better.
I'll see when I get home if he ate. I hope he ate at least 1. I doubt he ate the second (too much) but I gave him the option. I have to get some new type of worms to put in a bowl for him during the day.
I hope he doesn't go spazz again tonight. _________________ 1.1.12 Blue Tegus, 1.0 Red Tegu

Ah typical Petshop! Can't even afford to feed pinkies and crics! There such cheap food items! But you never know, you said there good right? This Tegu could of just been a bad stubborn apple...............
Well I'll cross my fingers that he at least took one pink.
Why don't you try silkies? They pretty nutrional and squirmy.

We bought some at the January show for the BD's. They weren't interested.
That's a good point, we'll have to get some for the Tegu. I don't want to feed him Meal worms, they're fairly useless, even more than crickets. _________________ 1.1.12 Blue Tegus, 1.0 Red Tegu
