My daughter and I are beginning a new breeding project and are going through the selection process to obtain suitable adults. Our first decision is in determining exactly what we want to breed. I am thinking of three options: blues, reds, or blueXred hybrid. I like the redXblue cross, but I wonder about the genetics, and it appears only two generations have been hatched. I've been doing a bit of research and I thought I would come to my favorite tegu site to get the skinny on the latest word in tegu breeding. Any thoughts on what you would pursue if you were to open up a new breeding project?

Thanks,
Laura R (FL)

Well, I'm picking up my female today and I've spotted a nice male around town. I think I'm going to try a B/Wxred cross next year. I'll keep my fingers crossed! Since the B/W and the reds seem closer genetically, I ffel more comfortable with that cross than the bluexred.

That is fine, except the Red x Black n whites have only been produced once that I know of. Bert Langerwerf produced one clutch of them last year. It was the only time it has been done that I know of.

That is true Varnyard fron the research I have done. The only b/wxred crosses that have successfully hatched are Bert's and he has only done it once. I aksed him about doing it again and he said it all depends, no gurantee. The mating times are different so if I recally what Bert had told me he had to get a late hibernating red to breed with an early white. So they had the same hibernating times/cycle. I have talked with Stella St.Pierre who has 2nd generation redxble crosses and she has never been able to produce a redxb/w cross. She did successfully produce the redxblues crosses but a lot of their stock was wipped out becuase of the hurricanes. The redxblue hybrids are able to reproduce but who knows if the redxb&w can. Good luck with whateever u do.

It has been done, if you click this picture twice it will open real large. It is one of Bert's from last year, to me it looks like chocolate. I think they are rather nice looking tegus.

Click it once to open, and again to make it larger:
