Well I have been here for a couple of months but have not said much. Well my name is John, I am 17. I breed crested geckos and I own a bearded dragon, a blue tongue skink, and a chameleon. I also take alot of nature photos around my woods. Well I hope to be getting a tegu soon but have to sell my blue tongue skink. If anyone would like to talk about geckos you can email me or pm me. I have 4 babies available right now 1 is a green/dalmation flame. 3 are cream flames.

Welcome!

Why do you have to sell your Blue Tongue Skink to get a Tegu?? Their requirements (housing) are very different.

I was planning on breeding them but decided not too. I know I have a 55 gallon tank that I plan on using or I am going to use my tank that is 4ft long 3 ft high and 16 inches wide. I know weird tank measurements.

You're going to need a MUCH bigger enclosure for a Tegu. That would work for about 6 months. Then you'll need a 6ft x 3ft Minimum, 8ft x 4ft preferred enclosure to let your 3.5 to 4.5ft long lizard walk around.

Just to tell you, vision cages pretty much suck for anything but snakes. They allow for little-no substrate depth, and only 1 light along with UVB.

I find that building over metal horse troughs is the best and most economical way to house large lizards.

http://www.proexotics.com/FAQ2.html#lizard_monitorhousing

I would read this FAQ, it has a lot of good info on troughs.

That would never fit in my house and I live in Illinois so it would be cool in the winter. I am thinking of taking my old shed and converting that into his pen.

Hey Mike, that's an awesome site! Thanks for posting that...I think I know how I'm going to set up most of my larger enclosures for now on!

Do you have enclosures like those, and if so do you have pics or any advice on how to go about building them?

Yes, I have enclosures like these. My cages look a lot like the ones in the link I posted, except the lights are mounted inside the cage.

The cost for a 6x2x2 trough with a nicely built top is as follows:

Galvanized 6x2x2 metal horse trough-161.08

Supplies:
5'' handle-3.48
Utility pull-(Chain that keeps the trough lid from moving too much)-1.98
Door pull-3.09
washers-5.00
hex nuts-2.03
T-hinge-2.49
barrel bolts-5.18
T-hinge-2.49
More bolts-3.84
2'x1' plexiglass-20.00
vents-6.99
Tax-7.22

=63.79

Plus wood makes the total for supplies about 94 dollars.

So the total would be about 255.08 (If you built it yourself)

I have a friend that picked up the cage, delivered, and built it for 50 bucks, so I payed 305.08.

I don't have the receipts for 8x3x2 and 4x2x2 sizes, sorry.

I'm not very handy, so I had to pay someone to build it, as you can see.

This is the cheapest, easiest caging that I have found for big lizards.
