I was holding my tegu today and noticed his forearms felt swollen or maybe very, very muscular. Should I be worried about this, or is it normal?
Thanks

One word - Pictures! If we can see what he looks like we can compare him to our Tegu's.

Ya a picture can really help, it can be a number or things or nothing at all but before the naming and diagonsing begins a picture would be better.

I haven't been able to get a picture up yet because my camera is being stupid. I'll get one up ASAP.

I know with iguanas that swolen limbs are often an indication of metabolic bone disease. It's appearance is the result of muscle and tissue taking the place of bone deteriorated from lack of calcium. Animals develope that robust Popeye the Sailorman look, but It means big trouble. Iguanas need vitamin D3 and constant expoxure to UV. I thought that with a good diet you shouldn't run into this issue with tegus, but that's what yours sounds like. Is your guy on a good balance diet? Is he walking properly or does he drag his legs or walk low to the ground with legs splayed outward? Those would be significant clues towards a diagnosis of calcium deficiency. If you think you do have a case of this, see a vet asap for a regimen of injections to reverse this deterioration and a new diet to keep him healthier. good luck.
