hows it going everyone... i just got aprrox. 14 month old tegu. its still a little skiddish... my friend and his girlfriend didnt pay too much attention to it. it will not eat crickets, superworms, or mice.. i have tried all 3 and i cant get it to eat.. it has been drinking water but it wont eat.. i am worried that it could starve and i do not want that... any comments or suggestions are greatly needed.. thanks Dan

We're new to tegus too. But from what I've been reading on this website, maybe your tegu is more interested in hibernating right now.
Our baby (born sometime this summer) has been eating like a horse - no signs of slowing down - until today.
Yesterday was "cricket day". He is usually starving the next day. Today he ate one fuzzy, no fruit, climbed out of his feeding bin, went right into his tank, basked a short time, and burrowed. And that is all we've seen of him today.
He has more than doubled in size since we got him. The base of his tail has gotten pretty fat. So I'm wondering if hibernation is right around the corner for us.
Goodluck getting to know your tegu. These guys are such characters!

thanks you to you both... i tried a frozen/thawed pinkie, then a fuzzy and he gobbled them both up. he/she is about 16-17 ins long. fun already.... just cant wait for it to grow up....

Welcome to the Tegu forum (family) .It is great to hear that he ate the already dead mice.I'm surprised to hear that he is just 16-17" long for being 14 months old .My Leonidas was 19" long at age 4 months old.Yes,it is true that they slow down in activity and the eating habit when it is winter time.Most of the time when the Tegu is in a new home it takes them a few days to get used to the change.Don't worry he is fine.Just in case you need it.Here is a menu that I got from Rick before (the Breeder,from this website).
Monday : Rodents & Strawberries
Tuesday : Discoid Roaches & Grapes
Wednesday : Lean ground Turkey & Cantaloup
Thursday : Rodents & a little bit of Banana
Friday : Crickets & Kiwi
Saturday : Turkey & Blueberries
Sunday : Rodents & Rasberries
Mangoes are also good to give to your Tegu.Please make sure that you give him some vitamine and calcium powder,too.Sometimes it happens that Tegus aren't eating fruits for a while.Oh,and you can give him some hard boiled egg,too.My Leonidas likes fish also (Cod) don't give him the feeder fish from the store because they can carry bacteria.
