Hi, I used to have an Argentine B/W tegu, Grim. She was a great lizard, but unfortunately my circumstances changed, I had to move and give her up as I had no room for her 8' cage anymore.

I really miss having a tegu, and today I saw an ad for a 'special' Columbian tegu. It is stunted at about 1.5 ft, it's jaw was broken when it was young (my guess is due to MBD...) but it has apparantly recovered well and the seller estimates it is around 5 years old.

I've actually seen this tegu before, the owner of a local pet store used to have it. Its a really nice lizard despites its problems. I'm wondering if I should buy him. I have room as long as it is really stunted and won't grow to full Col. tegu size...what do you think? Is it possible that with good care it may resuem growing? I'd like to give this tegu a better home but not sure if I should seeing how I had to give up my argentine...

here's a pic

As I Heard, Colombian Tegu are harder to tame than Argentine Tegu.

I don't know what are your goal...taming him? or just having a good pet to look?

If it's for taming, I would not buying him, because he's too old and have sometime a bad behavior, but if you are an experimented Tegu keeper (you had keep both argentine and colombian you know their behavior icon_wink.gif ) I would say GO FOR IT!!!

If it's for having a good pet to look, make sure you have all the thing for him (food, enclosure etc) and buy it.

This is my opinion, honestly, I heard too many bad stories about colombian Tegu, but I'm sure that we can tame them with a lot of patience. I saw a tame Komodo Dragon and a tame Crocodile so I guess that patience is the most important key. icon_wink.gif

However, I do not have a Tegu, icon_redface.gif so I guess that somebody that bought and old Colombian Tegu should give you a better tips about it.

Good luck!!

i dont think colombians are too bad.. i have one, i got her and she was suffering from early-ish stages of mbd... i have got her back up and running around and shes gaining weight. but the odd thing is that she is really tame... i dont know if it just her or because she "knows" i am trying to help her but i have never had a problem with her.. yet i have only had her for a few weeks now but shes great... i still got to get an arg. and see the difference but id say if u can supply what u think is a better life then what it is having now then do it up.. i did so for the same reason.. my "friend" had her and was neglecting her so i bought her from him... shes loving life now... before she was never out of her cage to roam.. now she gets about 2-5 hours a day... so if u like tegu and what not.. do it

I've had mine for about two years now and all i'll say is don't wave your hand around to fast in front of them (unless you have a fat one) because the feeding response is amazingly fast.
