hello there my family has owned an african grey parrot since august 2006 and we recently purchased a yellow collared macaw in august 2007. He used to always cuddle up with me, but the last several months he has been very nervous. He/she makes almost like a growling noise (it's non aggressive though I just can't describe the noise any better) and even recently it seems petrified. I can only think it's because 1) we keep him out on a perch almost 24/7 now and maybe he's stressed out and needs a cage?, 2) doesn't feel secure, ties in with the cage issue and maybe I could get it a little "Den" to hide under 3) it's jealous/angry/afraid of the new bird and since my family associates with the macaw, us too? Can anyone help us out it's getting to the point where he will at least a couple of times a day jump down from a 4-5' perch and he's starting to get pretty banged up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why does the grey not have a cage? That's like them not having a home, or a place where they feel secure. I would get the grey a good sized cage with lots of toys to start.

Is the new bird getting more attention than the grey? This could lead to shy behaviour, jealousy, and eventually "aggressive" behaviour.

The feeling of security is the biggest thing and is what should be worked on first. This can cause many issues.

Post your question on www.greyforums.net that site is the best grey community online at the moment and they have answered all my questions and then some. i would offer my advice but I am a new grey owner as well so i don't want to give you bad info. Just make sure if you think falling or jumping might occur to pad the floor beneath where it could fall. There breast bone is extremely frail and one bad spill could break bones or even kill your bird.
