... he's was as 'nile'ish as they come right. I think we just got use to each other, neither one of us <'King' and me> would give in.
the one day I noticed his front leg was swollen, then the swelling went down, then it swelled again and I noticed a bump under his jaw. took 'King' to the vet ...abscess got antibiotics. he still does not use that front leg. there has been little improvement and I have to hand feed him pinkies. he is alert but definately not as spunky as my 'could be' nasty buddy
anybody have anything similar happen
I hope he is on the mend!
I have never experienced anything like that with mine.
I have 2 Ornates - 1 about 3 months old and 20" and the other about 1 year old at 4'. My newest Ornate is super healthy, fiesty and flighty
like a healthy baby should be.
My 1 year old was a scrawny, nervous 15" baby when I got him and not in the best health. As a result he had a few trips to the vet for flagyl & panacure along with two rounds of antibiotics for a lingering cold or RI of some sort. Eventually he rebounded and then grew like crazy.
Imported monitors do not handle shipping and the stress of shipping very well at all. They are shipped in the worst conditions and may go weeks with out food or water. Because Niles, Ornates and Black Throats can be so shy and nervous that only adds to the stress and lowers their immunity.
Good luck with your Nile! Post some picks when you can.
I will upload some pix of my new Ornate in my gallery today.

thank you eradi .
it will be a week tommorrow since his vet visit and his meds.
now that you mention it 'King' has been with me for close to two years and he really hasn't grown that much at all since I brought him home. where as I expect he would.
could there be something wrong from the start
anybody ever have this experience ?
So how big is he now and how big was he when you got him?
Yes, he could have had something wrong with him the whole time
you have had him. He also could have been stunted.

'King' is about 8 inches. when I got him he was so small maybe about 6 inches. he looked very well ..eyes, color
the only thing he would ever eat is crickets and not all the time. I tried to get him on meat - even the smallest of pinkies. would not touch them.
what is s t u n t e d ?
Do you have any photos of your enclosure? In most instances, slow growing monitors that succumb to health issues easily can be turned around through some adjustments to their husbandry.

I had a nile mon. for a while before I joined the army and had to give him away. He was bit on the led and it swelled up. i had to go the the rep vet twice to have it drained, and I had to inject the drainage spot with Iodine. That is the last time I'll feed my rep's live mice or rat's.
crocdoc, do you think he will live ? (so far) each day he seems a lilttle better . 'King' is a heck of a fighter. I do not have any pics, working on that too. I have him in a 30 gal. - plenty of room. little swimming hole.
105-110 in his basking area. I changed the bedding to newspapers now so he would not hurt himself any further.
joshjames, I'm sorry to hear you had to give yours away . how big was he did you have him since he was small
anybody ever hear of metatastic calcification
he has the exact same symtoms

Hi angelrose.First I would like to say be careful with the newspaper because the ink they use could be toxic.I would go to a craft store and get a roll of regular brown paper.I don't know any thing about monitors but when my Tegu didn't eat when he was sick the vet told me to force feed him with some chicken or turkey ( with or with out gravy ) baby food and add some vitamine and calcium powder. When my dog ate a toxic plant at some ones house and almost died one of the things the vet gave him was gatorade so he will not get dehydrated and het gets a lot of nourishment that way, too. But I don't know if that would work for your monitor.Call your vet and ask him.I give my dogs gatorade some times in the summer time if they played hard and sweated a lot.
Point Blank: your're slowly killing your Monitor by not applying proper husbandry.
The first step would be to up your basking temps to 140. Second would be to change the substrate to dirt, and provide enough depth to allow the animal to dig and create burrows. Third, would be to switch to a whole food diet and eliminate any gaps or holes towards proper nutrition. I guarantee you these three things will just about take care of any problems your having. These animals are just about bullet proof when proper husbandry is applied, but have problems when they are not allowed to properly thermoregulate. You'll also see your "tame" Monitor being not so tame when given a proper temp. gradient. It will turn into a typical defensive/skittish Nile, so be prepared. Varanus.net and the Pro-Exotics FAQ have the best information if you need to verify what I've stated above. You have an uphill battle, what your experiencing may have caused long term damage. Once the metabolization issues are fixed, you'll be able to get a better idea of what is actually going on, and if it can be treated.

EricIvins thank you for correcting me about the paper thing.Like I sad I don't know any thing about monitors but I realise that I should of done some research first before I give her the advise about the paper thing ( I just read about the brown paper on a nother forum and I really thought if some one wants to use paper than the brown paper would be better). It was nice of you not to just tell her what she was doing is wrong but you gave her some info to do some research also.Thanks.
Angelrose DO NOT GIVE UP HOPE.When my dog almost died and was all skin and bones and a lot of people didn't think he would make it he made it.And he turned out great.Just do as much research as possible and do your best and HOPE AND PRAY.Mabe you also should bring him to the vet to see if he needs any meds.Miracles do happen.I had a lot of them.Take care and good luck.
