Just checking in to see what I have missed in the last few weeks? I had me a nice trip over to Nashville , TN to look at property there two weeks ago. But did not find one yet.
Can you believe that NYG/Green bay game? Wow, that was some pressure on the kicker after missing two in a row!

I've been away too, but just cause of work and being sick (flu ). I am actually more involved now at my zoo--I'm the second in command of reptiles (WOW--They trust me!!! ) And I get to go to an amphibian class in April! --There is even a class on training amphibians--
In any case, I'm glad to be back--Its like reuniting with old friends...

At the Sacramento Zoo on Land Park Drive? That must suck. Hope you take better care of their reptile section than the current staff does. Ugh the NorCalHerpSociety is comprised of pragmatic and egotistical ball python fanatics with an almost non-existent practice of the sharing of information. I'm considerring starting a club for people who actually care about all reptiles and are willing to do some research and dedicate some effort to the practice. Any "reptile Association" that doesn't even take time to help members, and will only accept abondoned reptiles with an intense background and investigation doesn't deserve to exist.

ummm...actually, it does'nt suck at all. As for taking in abandoned reptiles, we are not allowed to-we do not have any extra space to take care of the animals, and being part of the AZA, requires that zoos take in animals that are from other accredited facilities (sorta sucks). Truthfully, I would much rather have the herp society take in abandoned herps, because the people who adopt them will truly adopt them--they wont have to share their attention with others---and those same adopted animals wont have to deal with the public banging on glass day in and out to get them to move.
People have left animals at the zoo before--my tegu was actually left at our outside gate--in a 10 gallon aquarium--in November--he had lost toes to bad sheds,and he has scarring from nose rubbing--needless to say, he's a happy tegu in my house now...
I'm curious, in what way are the animals mistreated in the reptile house? We give them proper food of good quality, great vet care, and as much space as possible. The main thing I would like to change would be to figure out how to get stupid people to quit knocking and pounding on the enclosure windows just to get a rise out of the animals---ie. stressing them out.

I wasn't saying the zoo should take in abandoned reptiles. I was saying that the herp society should. NCHS doesn't take in any animals that they don't approve. I agree with what you said about people and the windows as far as being mistreated.That's what I was saying but was in a rush on my pda. People banging on windows, kids yelling at the animals. Ugh... I just wanna strangle em. People don't realize that stress KILLS reptiles. It's not a dog that gets over it. I didn't mean the staff at the zoo are incompitent, I just meant that there should be another way for the animals to be seen or displayed, and the collection they have royally blows. Anyone can get a heloderma and especially in sacramento because the best breeder is right here in town. Sorry bro, I didn't mean to sound like I don't like the zoo staff.
1. Animals are being harrassed.
2. Collection is sub-par.
3. NCHS is as worthless as tits on a boar.
I'm glad someone is taking care of them who actually cares. I tried to get in contact with you awhile ago but you blew me off. What was up with that? What do you think about starting a reptile club in the greater Sacramento area. I'm in Carmichael (just moved from 2 blocks from the zoo) and if I recall you're a Davis student?

OOOHH, OK. Lets see, I get what you're saying now....I dont recall getting any messages from you before (I answer anything sent to me--I promise...), but then again, maybe you have me confused with someone else? I dont go to Davis (I am a long term ARC student--I've been lazy about finishing school ). I also have not been on this site for a while--by all means, e-mail me, I would be happy to be part of a local group.
Now, the zoo stuff,
We ( the lead reptile guy and I) are not overly thrilled with our collection either; there are a number of reasons we have some stuff but not others...
1: some of our older stuff (common boas, bengal monitors, bibrons geckos, + others) are old donations--we cant send them to other zoos and they are not handleable (ok, the geckos, we can hold. ) so we have to keep them as long as they live--and we have a knack for setting age records in that place! So some of the exhibits that I want to redo are stuck as they are for now.
2: In some cases, (both species of club tailed iguanas) are actually very rare in zoos, so we are trying for a breeding program to increase there numbers.
3.When it comes to our collection, the keepers have little say--especially when it comes to what our curator likes & dislikes (he's afraid of big snakes , does'nt want to deal with getting old world antivenin--expensive and expires quick-so no cobras or mambas , you get the idea.)
It's sorta sad--HOWEVER....we are getting some new creatures in soon; we will be displaying a giant garter snake (Native species-sorta cool), marine toads, some different frogs, and we have been trying to get a Cantil (there have been quarantine issues). Oh yeah, we also have been trying to figure out a good way to exhibit a caecilian (aka-rubber eel in pet stores)--I have to admit, I find these guys to be really cool.
Having grown up in Sac, I've seen this zoo at its worst...it has improved, but unfortunately, the reptile house is often pushed back in lieu of the bigger animals. The only reason that we are getting a bunch of frogs this year is because the AZA has named 2008 the year of the frog.
I love my job there, and I take great pride in the level of care of my herps. That being said....If you or anyone else visits the Sacramento zoo and has an idea or two to better the reptile house exhibits (Within reason!--I can only do so much! ) Please e-mail me--Ive learned a lot already, but I know I need to learn more!
Okay, now that I have written a book , I apologize for misunderstanding what you wrote---I actually agree with most everything you said--and I hope to hear from you soon! (sometimes it takes me a few days to check e-mails, but I usually get to them within 3-4 days!
