Just a quick question. I'm getting a juvenile blue tegu sometime this week or next. I have some apsen bedding left over from my degus. I was wondering if this could be used as substrate? The tegu would not be fed on it. Thanks =)
I wouldnt use that stuff - while it is marketted at "burrowing reptiles", I think gets mouldier quicker than other types of wood-based substrate. Best bet is to go and buy a big bag of cypress/orchid mulch which will hold moisture and not give you the headache of going bad right away. You can then also hopefully put a deep layer of substrate in so that your tegu can enjoy digging around in it

I was always under the impression that Cypress mulch irritates reptile's skin, or is this just certain reptiles. I use aspen wood chip, never had any go mouldy, and it has much better water absorption than cypress, meaning it keep's the enclosure more humid.

That's what I thought too. I have had cypress in for a while and I smell it getting mildewy. I keep having to change it out. _________________ Tara

I've been using cypress for years and love it. I haven't had any problems with it. When I was keeping it in the visions it would completely dry out! It became like arizona! Anyways....You just keep spraying it. I don't have experience with other bedding types. _________________ John Light
