Hey Matt. Welcome to http://thetegu.com I am in North Carolina, as well. Raleigh, to be exact. Tell us about your cage. How big is it? What will it be made out of? Do you know what you'll be using for heat, light, and UVB yet? What about substrate? Cypress Mulch is readily available here and inexpensive. Makes a great substrate for tegus. Where are you getting your tegu? _________________ Kris, Herps they're not just a hobby, they're a way of life!

haha ok i can do that... hmm lets see..the cage im building is about 5x4x3(almost 4...it looks like a table..) Im making the whole thing out of wood with custom fitted glass sides(i was going to use plexyglass from lowes but it isnt really clear and it gets messed up fast, and the glass is cheaper).. so wood and glass.. and then then just stuff to make it look nice.....its sealed too so nothing will happen to it...for the lighting...i havnt picked up any yet... im gonna get that probably a little wile before i pick up the tegu this summer up in PA. URR oh yea im gonna use cypress mulch too ....ill have pics of the tank when its done... I take pics after I get each section done so i have quite a fiew lol...but it will be done soon. hope that helped _________________ Semper FI

Sounds great! Why are you going to PA? I was born and raised there.
Can't wait to see the pics! I built my own cage, too. It sucked. There was a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and a broken toe! Ugh.
Anyways, welcome!
haha same..born and raised in pittsburgh..but im going up there cause i just moved from up there to NC and i still have a few friends i like to chill with during the summer..so im just gonna pick up my tegu then at one of the shows with another person from this site.. idk her screenname...but her name is justine...
hehe sounds great. I left NE PA in 1988 and have only been home 4 times since. The last time was in 1998. My family and friends always want to know why I don't move back. Then I call them on February 18th and tell them it's 72 degrees outside and listen to how they have over a foot of snow on the ground and it's 15 degrees outside! haha duh! _________________ Kris, Herps they're not just a hobby, they're a way of life!
I build loads of cages too.. May I suggest (that is if you haven't already built it by now) That instead of using glass you use a laminate glass? It is much safer for your tegu if he runs into it or tail whips it.
oh, if you don't know what laminate glass is, basically its two pieces of glass stuck together with a clear piece of adeshive plastic in the middle.
If it were to be smashed then instead of shattering, it would just crack, but stay together.
Thats what I have used for both my Iguana and my WT monitor _________________ Davii

HAHAHA thats probably the same reason why all my friends hate me now... last week i was outside and shorts and T and my friends called...im like "so how is the weather up there... OH dude we got like 2 feet of snow.. and cant even walk out of my house...AWW thats to bad.. well....... going to the beach now.. ttyl..click" _________________ Semper FI
welcome, I'm Semi-new here myself, but trust me anything you need to know you will probably find on this site, there are alot of people here who have alot of experiance with tegus
Me and my husband built our cage too... ok so my uncle did most of the work... haha. but anyway, its friggin huge, way taller than it needed to be, because we have the TV on top of it. haha. The door is slightly crooked because he cut the opening himself and well.. he shyed off the line a bit. So one side has a gap... lol..
Either way I'm glad I built my own, I can look at it and go, hey its not perfect but I did it!
I went with mesh on the door because I wasnt sure how else she was going to get some air in there, and PlexiGlass sounded like it wouldnt work out so well. If we keep her we will probably switch out at least half of the door because its hard to keep it hot enough in there with all the heat going out the mesh.... she likes to climb it though, so i might keep it
