Hello All:

Ok, I have rescued many reptiles and tegu's and now have an interesting situation. Here is the long story.

Well, both red tegu's are 3 years old now and had been introduced and were hibernating fine this winter. Now that spring or warm up is here.
First Ruby who we think is the female started vibrating her jaws and giving little love nibbles on Red who we think the male, on the tail. No harm done and was fine still living with each other. Ruby sure looked like presenting to Red and was determined to get it. But almost seemed like role reversal.
No harm was being done so we left them alone.

Now, Roles have been reversed again.
Red has now begun to chase Ruby and Ruby seems to be trying to get away from Red. This seems more aggressive and I am getting concerned.

Now. My question is:
Can two males habitat with each other peacefully?
If one is actually a female would this be a cause to their actions?
Note: They both need to be double sexed. That is because I am getting conflicting information on sexing them.

Looking forward to all your helpful advise.
Thank you.

look at the jowls, they are 3 years old, it's easy to know if they are male or not.

jowls=male
no jowls= female

If they are already 3 years old look between their tail and belly, where they do their things and look for two little bumps or protuberances, one at each side. If you find them, then you are watching at a male, if not it's a female. Now you can be sure of their sex. icon_wink.gif

I will try and get some good pictures of them tomorrow some time.

Can male red tegu's co-habitate with each other peacefully?

Thank you for your responses.

as Rick told me when placing any tegus together you should watch them for a few days. one may be more territorial then the other.

Well, sorry about the delay in response.
I have been extremely busy with rescue's etc.

I do believe I have two males. They are becoming territorial and I have now separated them.

Looks like I will be selling the larger perfect male.

Wanted a female but got stuck with two males.
But, I do have a friend with a red female.
So we will think about getting one of mine together.

Thanks again for all your replies and advise.
I will keep you updated on the going on's.

They are both the same Snout to vent. One is larger because of a full tail. The other was a rescue of mine that I kept and is missing a piece of her tail.
Both are 3 years old.

OH! Duh! Here's a link to a picture of them.
So you can see what they look like.

In the second picture. The picture of both of them in the tub.
The one on the left is the male I will be selling.
That's a picture shortly after I first got him.
He now has put some pounds on and calmed down so much.
I worked a lot with him.
