I put my tegus outside and they are having a hard time adjusting. It's going on 4 weeks and with all the sights and smells I'm sure it is quite the sensory overload. If they see anything they run and hide....including me. : ( I miss them not being in the house where I can see them any time I want and I hate that they are now afraid of me. I can't imagine not giving them places to hide....but am tempted to remove them.
Any suggestions or should I try that "patience" thing? : )

Yes well they need time to adjust to that kind of environment change. Best thing is that "patience" thing. Check at what distance you are when they run and hide. Then try to be within that distance or a little bit closer for an hour or 2 every day. They have a lot of patience and will otherwise just get used to wait until the coast is clear and then go out.
But try to get them used of movement around them.....that be kids or persons or what ever....just not too close at first, coz they might get stressed. It's a very curious specie and won't stop doing their thing. Just need some time to analyze every situation first.
I bet they will come out again after only 20 - 30 min so be patient

You can also cover most of the sides, so they only get stimuli from one side, later you can remove the covers, one side at a time. _________________ Raw Bear with Salt tastes like Oysters.
Well....I knew the patience thing was the way to go. I am always hopeful, however, that someday someone will tell me those magic words that make things perfect NOW. : ) I'm also in the market for a magic horse halter.....dog leash....hair brush..........................................
75% of the sides are blocked due to the cold spell that hit us last week (it's back in the 80's this week) and I will leave them blocked. The walkway is 10 feet from them....but they would run hide when I was still a good 20 feet away. Blocking that side has helped as they can't see me... but I also can not see them. : ) When I try to take a peek to see if they look ok....they run like cockroaches. Now that it is warming again I'm sure they will explore more and not just come out to sit in the basking spot.
I'll be patient...it's just tough going from babies that I could hold, hug and kiss to having them act wild. I miss them.
