Hey. As you probably know by now, I have one male and one female Bearded Dragon. they are about 5-6months old. They have just started mating. I was going to separate them and wait until they are old but the local pet store said not to mess with Nature, after all, they know when the time is right.

Over the last couple of days my female is not eating, and has just gone very lifeless. You can pick her up, and she will just hang, Unlike how she used to be really feisty.

I wondered whether this was related with mating and maturity, or does she have an Illness that could possible be passed onto my fit and healthy male?

I don't think they can produce eggs or mature them until they are about 18 months (Adult). I would seperate them straight away as dominance issues will start to kick in and fights, lack of eating will happen. Often people think reptiles need companions and they don't . The reason she is like that is food dominance or just dominance in general. <--- This applies if they are in the same tank.

Beardies don't do well together as companions.

When you say not being able to produce eggs or mature them, do you mean, not at all at this age? Or do you mean, the eggs are there, but die at an early age?

And yeah, she certainly seems scared of him. She hangs around the cooler end of the tank, away from the male.

And what appears to be fights usually just evolve into mating.

And they always seemed good as companions.. I mean, they would always be with one another, and you would see them licking each others faces etc.

I'm not very sure about the eggs I'll need to research them and keep in contact.

Your male is definitely the dominant one. If you are too enclose them together they will need 2-3 basing spots a couple of hides and a large enlosure like a 6ftx2x2 or a 6ftx3x3. The best idea is to seperate them it will cost less and you are assured that they wont get hurt and they will eat well...

Dominance isn't an issue when they are young it comes into matter as they mature.

What size is their enclosure now?

At the moment I have a full six foot tank that is separated into a 2ft and a 4ft. The beardies are in the 4ft, with a small corn snake being in the 2ft.

I wasnt advised to put them in a 6foot tank. Thats why I partitioned it at 3ft and 3ft. and just last week made the beardies section a foot longer.

Would the female be okay in the 2ft area until I get another 3 foot tank built that would be kept in a separate room?

from head to tail she would be approx just over a foot from head to tail.

and I have a small box that I used to have my corn snake in. All I have to to is buy another heat mat because I gave it away

Erm, sounds ok. If nothing extreme happens and you follow the proceedures of them being together ( Put in an extra hide, extra basking spots she could stay there for a while). While you build the tank. I'm just taking the snake into consideration. But whatever seems easier too you will work ok icon_smile.gif

If you are confused I would go onto Beardeddragon.org, it's a large community of experienced bearded dragon owners.

the snake is approx 18inches, and about 10mm around. I have a 9l plastic tub that he goes in. He seems to prefer it actually.

and they barely use hides? I had hides in and they prefered to stay out and bask, and the most they would do would retreat under some leaves

I've just had another idea of partitioning it back into two three foots and basically making the same style tank twice..

what do you thinnk?

I just thought does that not cause a problem with the UVB bulb?

Well, they used to be in a six foot tank all to themselves. but they were so small it was silly. (I bought them at a very young age)

So I have something like a 48inch UV bulb, I just need to cut a hole in the top of the partition and slide it through, it shouldnt be a problem. I'll need to buy another basking bulb and fitting etc. though.
