First please make sure that you can afford one because they can get very expansive because since they become very large you would need to buy or build a enclosure ( 8x4x4 ).They eat a lot and they want A LOT OF ATTENTION .I know there are a few members here on the forum that have a tame columbian Tegu but they are a lot harder to tame than the argentine Tegu. With the red Tegus you would have to make sure that he/she gets the right intake of fruits because of there color. The black and white ones and reds become very large.I think the smallest one of the Tegus are the blue ones. Before you buy one please read as much as you can about the Tegus.Take care and good luck.

I had a Columbian for my very first one and I guess I ended up with an "odd" one because he was very tame, although he did bite me twice but it was my own fault, like posted above, they are supposed to be the wildest ones and hard to tame down. Mine was bought from Petco (BAD IDEA- the reptile "specialist" told me to buy a heat rock and said he could live his life out in a 22 gallon long) and he ended up having MBD. Rounds of injectable antibiotics and calcium didn't cure him and sadly he died of kidney failure. He was really neat for the 2+ years I had him. The one I have now, a very robust Argentine, is almost the opposite. He is stand offish at times but also lets me pick him up if needed (I don't have the balls to take off my welders gloves yet). I don't allow him to free roam very often because I have a dog and once he tried to eat part of her tennis ball. Fun game of tug of war though! There are pros and cons to both, maybe it would be beneficial to interact with some before you decide. And how much space you have must be taken into consideration like the above replies say. Good luck, they are awesome pets!

Hi txrepgirl, I got Tango from Bert in January of '06 and at that time he was around 8 months maybe, I'll have to double check that. Here's his baby pic, fresh from the UPS truck and ice cold! When he warmed up he hissed at me.
