My "yearling" is waking up, and I am finishing off my Tegu's enclosure. I had a question about using Cinder Blocks. If I layed them next to each other so the holes lined up, put them under the heat source, and burried them except for the top, I figured they'd make a nice hide in the holes, and a decent hot spot. Any pros or cons??
blocks and bricks are like the swiss army knife of enclosures, i use bricks they retain heat under the basking light, the are rough to the touch to help shed, and the are level basking platforms for consistant temps

I use 2 cinder blocks side by side in my 7x3x3 enclosure. my tegu's LOVE them for the reasons you hinted at. One they retain heat really well, two they file their nails down some so you don't get torn to shreds later on in life and three because they provide a nice sub terrainean type heated underground lair. It's like a cool spot for them but at the same time nice and toasty and they love it. You should put them in the corner of your encloser with the holes facing towards the front of the cage and make sure it's directly under the light. For even more nice effect put a sexy looking flat rock or some sort of tile on top of the cinder blocks with a smooth surface to help them bask. The darker the rock the hotter it will get so guestimate on how hot you need or want it. Also i recommend splashing some loose mulch inside the holes under the cinder blocks. That is what I did and my tegus love it under their and removed it all into a nice little bed with a view and central heating ^_^ Hope this helps I can take pics of my cage if you like to give you a visual idea of what I mean with the blocks. Take care!
