Hello, I'm new to this site (as a member at least) I am currently building a cage for a tegu. I had my heart set on a Gold. I am now reading on sites that they are much harder to tame than some of the other colors. Is there really that much of a difference between the species or does it just vary from lizard to lizard?

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
TOM

cpt,

As you said, every lizard have his own personnality, but you have to go with the general behavior. Of course, in this forum, you will see that Argentine B/W Tegu, blue Tegu and Red Tegu seems to be the tamest Tegus. icon_biggrin.gif I heard a lot of bad info of colombian and Gold Tegu. BUT, this doesnt mean that they are ALL untame. You can talk to Meanah and Angelrose (two wonderful person here) who have very very tame colombian Tegu. icon_biggrin.gif

What you have to think is this, if you are looking to a tame lizard, you have to choose the one that is going to be easier or naturally tame. icon_biggrin.gif Argentine Tegu seems to be the best, but it doesn't mean that colombian and Gold Tegus are bad pets. You know Bearded Dragon are generally one of the tamest lizard in the world, icon_biggrin.gif but I read that some of them were real nightmare. Same thing for a Nile monitor, they gerenally have a skittish personality, but then again, I heard some story of dog tame Nile monitor. icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif

It's a question of general, if you already have a good experience with Tegu, and you want to have a new Tegu with a different behavior into your collection, I would say go for it, icon_biggrin.gif but if you are here too get the easier Tegu to tame, buy an Argentine (look at the polls for some support), they have a good temperament. icon_biggrin.gif

However, I do not have the biggest knowledge about Tegus, but I know that they can be tame with alot of time and patience! icon_biggrin.gif

good luck! icon_biggrin.gif

hello CptnTightPants and welcome to theTegu family icon_biggrin.gif

GENERALLY speaking argentines are easier to tame then colombians (but not in my case).

it depends on exactly what your looking for in a pet.
from what you wrote I would then say to go with the gold colombian. if your heart is set on a gold colombian you will probably put forth more love, care, attention and patience, therefore (in time) producing a tame tegu.

I have a b/w colombian Angel and she is with me for about three years. I used to see her so much in the pet store my heart was set on her. (and yes the pet store did not have nice things to say about her nasty, bit). since I brought her home we have been inseparable and she is my bliss.
recently, (about three months ago) I got a m/f, b/w argentines. upon arrival the female whipped me more times then my nile monitor I had. however, she is a sweetie and no problems now.

colombian tegus are smaller tegus (as like the argentine blue) they just tend to be a little skittish because they are used to being the prey because of their size. once there is trust as like with any other animal things will only get better icon_wink.gif and they do not hibernate icon_wink.gif
argentine tegus are larger tegus and are not as skittish and easier to tame.
so see what kind of space you have available also.
btw, I love gold tegus, beautiful color icon_cool.gif
