I just adopted an Argentine black and white tegu a couple of days ago and I love him! I believe hes around a year and a half old considering he's only 2ft 8 inches long. I believe it's a Male but I'm completely unsure. Could someone explain how to sex them & where is the vent located?

Well he has a great temperament outside of his cage, mostly sleeps or wanders around, However when hes inside his cage and I open the screen top he thinks I'm a snack. I started to work on the bowl training for food but is there anything else I can do? Another thing, I have a whole list of food that I can feed him but how many times a day should I? Right now I make him a little egg breakfast in the morning, then later a couple fruits as a snack then around 7pm a piece of poultry or beef. Is this too much? I had to change his diet because his last owners had him solely on rats which I know is way to high in fat, so i figured I'd limit him to maybe one mouse twice a week. Onyx and I would greatly appreciate the help! Here's a picture of him snoozing on me ^^

Welcome to thetegu!

About sexing a Tegu, there is 2 ways, the jowls and looking the vent. If the the tegu has 2 big jowls (its a male) or if you can touch under near de vent (where it takes a poop) you can feel a kind of bulb.

About eating, as for the schedule, Rick(the administrator) feed his Tegu everyday. I would not give him to much egg, just as a threat, they can eat a lot of fruits and veggies.

You can take a look at Rick's caresheet for a proper schedule.

i mix my my veggies and fruit in with turkey and feed them one big meal, i do this to establish a routine, if you feed him all the time he might associate you with food and start nipping at fingers , it is also good because they go poop after a big meal so you can train them to poop in the same place
for sexing if its a male he will have big jowels and females will not

Welcome TDragon89 to the Tegu forum family and congrats on your new Tegu.I recommend to let your Tegu bask for one hour before feeding him. When you feed him get a separate clean bin,put the food in there than bring the Tegu to the food. That way he knows that your fingers are not food and he has to wait for you to bring him to his food.I also would feed him as much as he wants to in one session. Please do not for get to give him his calcium and vitamine powder.Meanah ( Daniel ) already gave you Ricks ( breeder ) care sheet on when to give him the calcium and vitamine powder.Thank you Daniel. Here is a video on how to sex a Tegu.Hope that helps.Good luck with your Tegu and thanks for sharing the very nice picture with us icon_wink.gif .
