Hey, I have about a 3 month old argentine red tegu in a 29 gallon long tank which is about 2.5 ft long 1ft wide and 2ft tall. He (or she i dont know yet) is constantly trying to escape or "dig through the cage." I handle him two or three times a day and let him move his legs crawling around me. What i really want to know is, is this cage i have extremly to small for this little guy or do I just have an adventerous tegu?
Your Tegu had a big enough Terrarium, but if he is 12 inches or over, you will have to thing about building a Terrarium (4x2x2 feet) and for an adult (7x4x3feet)
Also, they have a reputation to be very curious, don't worry about it! _________________ Ben

He is right around 10-12 inches so I should start looking for a new cage pretty soon... Thanks alot Ben I appreciate all your help. Lol most of the cage dimensions on these forums were for adult to sub adult lizards so I really had no idea, im just glad my lizard isnt crazy!

Does he/she have at least 6 or 8 inches of substrate to burrow in? How about a hide? Usually if they get freaked they will just burrow and feel safe then. I don't even have any hides in my guy's enclosure....he just burrows whenever he wants to (which is most of the time).

Sure thing....in that small of an enclosure the substrate should not be too costly. I don't know where you live, but here in the Chicago area cypress mulch is available year-round and it's only about $3 a bag. You wouldn't even use a whole bag in that enclosure. I use 7 bags in my 8x3 enclosure, but it's nice and deep.....10" or more I would say.
