Hello all, A fraternity brother of mine has a red footed tortuous and he created a custom humidifier for him. He got the idea from a guy that grew his own mushrooms(not sure what mushrooms). It consists of an aquarium air pump, a jar of water, a sponge, and two tubes from an aquarium. Has anyone ever heard of making a custom humidifier for tegus?

I just plumbed some PVC pipe with misting nozzles (the PVC and nozzles probably totalled about $20) into my home plumbing with a shutoff valve. It's real convenient. Each day when I come into the room, I turn the valve on for 20 or 30 seconds and then shut it off. I have ZERO problems with humidity levels. I can say that my enclousure isn't overly vented though. I think it's VERY easy to vent too much. Humidity escapes very easily. The only vents that I have are whatever air can get through the gaps in the sliding glass doors on the front, and the holes for the cords to the lights in the enclosure. I have no problems with mold or anything like that, either. If you use Cypress mulch, it's probably NOT going to mold. It's very resistant to mold (Cypress trees live in standing water, and they don't mold). Here are some photos that show how mine is set up and plumbed into my home's plumbing (which I did myself also).

It's pretty easy to do. The only trick at all is the tapping into your home's pipes. Luckily for me Al's cage is in a semi-finished basement with the ceiling open and there are copper pipes all over the place to tap into. All I really had to buy in copper was a "T" fitting, a straight piece (cut into two pieces), a couple of 90 degree elbows, and an di-electric adapter to attach the copper to the garden hose fitting on the PVC side. The PVC pipe is cheap, and I think the nozzles were around $3 each or something. The most expensive part of the whole system was the filter that the nozzle makers highly recommended to prevent the nozzles from clogging. In hindsight, I'm not sure it wouldn't be cheaper to just replace the nozzles when they got clogged...they just screw into the PVC sockets...nothing magical. Mounting it in the enclosure is simply a matter of drilling holes in the top for the PVC to come through, attach threaded fittings on the pieces that run up through the top of the enclosure, then screw on some caps to hold the PVC up. Just like putting lego together, really. PVC couldn't be easier to work with. Purple primer, followed by PVC cement, twist it and hold it for 15 seconds and you're good to go. You can basically run water through it immediately. The system really works well, and I don't have to anything other than flip the valve open. I DID have it hooked up to one of those sprinkler timers, but one time it stayed ON and I ended up with about 90 gallons of water inside the enclosure (Al wasn't in there yet, so no biggie). That was a GREAT test of my vinyl sheet flooring and even more of a test for my caulking skills! It HELD the 90 gallons of water without leaking all over the floor! I was impressed! So now I just turn the valve manually. Works like a champ.
a carnt help but look at the way you,ve made your sprinkler system, and think about how your tegu would feel, if all of a sudden theres water pssing everywhere lol, this would surely put him through some freeky shocks and cause stress....them sprinklers give of a good sprinkle of water, and its rather powerful spraying, ut,d soon scare the living crap out of him, im only thinking how he,d feel with this setup, have you actually tried this setup woth him in the tank, if so how does he react to the pressure of the sprinklers, is he scared at all.........sorry if im sounding of mate, im just curious thats all....looking at the idea is seems good,but does it work with him in it,

Oh my, not STRESS! Hahaha. Just kidding. Okay, first of all there are 3 misting nozzles, all towards one end of the enclosure. Water does NOT come pouring out of them...it's a fine mist. Most times when I turn it on, he's burrowed so he never feels it directly. Sometimes he's out when I turn it on. In those cases he has actually moved UNDER the mister and planted his fat little butt right under the nozzle. Trust me when I tell you he's not a all freaked out by it. It's a natural thing. Do you think they "freak out" when it starts raining in the wild? It's not like I'm blasting him across the enclosure with a pressure washer...Hehehe. It works great, didn't cost much to make, was FUN to design and make, and is FAR from freaking him or stressing him out. Hopefully that answers all of your questions and concerns. If anyone is interested in the place where I got the misting nozzles and filter, I can dig that information up again. It's definitely on one of my old posts here from last year if you want to search it out.

I tried a new thing lately, i placed a second water bowl in Oz's enclosure and hooked up an airpump with the hose leading to the bottom of the bowl. It actually works great. I was worried he would fall in cause its a little deep but i placed some fake plants to make it too hard to get to but it keeps me from spraying the cage every few hours. It jumped my avg humidity without spraying from 50 to 75... i was even considering putting a small heatingpad under it to see if that helps get to the 80-85% mark.

I found my old post with the details of materials. Obviously, you could buy the teflon tape anywhere. See, each nozzle flows at 1 gallon per HOUR, so not too fast really. Leave the thing on for an hour and it's only 3 gallons. Here you go man:

You mean we aren't supposed to use pressure washers to mist the cages? JK. Cortez, you mean you used a fish tank bubbler thing and it raised the humidity that much? I would love to try that!
