collapable cages

Im looking to build or purchase a cage for Oz my 8 month old bw tegu. I am a college student and i need a cage that collapses or disassembles easily for transportation to my home in the summer. Ive been looking into building one, has anyone made a cage that would be ideal for my situation?

i have yet to hear of one.. but i bet u could make it so it would have hinges and move easy

you could probably do it, but it would not be water proof or hold humidity I am guessing.

yeah.. but u could make locking walls.. and then a top that would lock on as well. but damn..

How big are you planning to make it?

I haven't heard of one yet but I was just thinking what if you built one that is build like a big collapsible dog kennel.All you have to do is cut the silicone edges open collapse your enclosure and when you get to your other home seal it back up.The only bad thing would be is it's going to be very big and heavy.Just a thought.

I built my enclosure it two halves, but I would definitely NOT consider it something that you could use. Each HALF of the cage weighs well over 100 pounds (thanks to the pressure-treated lumber that I used for the framing, and the particle board that I used for the walls). I agree that you will have problems with the following if you build a collapsible enclosure:

1 - Keeping it warm enough

2 - Keeping it humid enough

3 - Making it sturdy enough to prevent escape OR hold enough mulch so the Tegu can burrow

Not trying to be a party-pooper...and if you come up with an idea for your enclosure, please share it with us here.

i have one thought... build from the bottom up about a foot and have a place where it can almost have joints for the top piece to mount to it
and then make the top half and down about a foot and make the corresponding joint. so that it can sit on top of the other one...?

the one that ive come up with so far includes joints where the sides slide into place and bolt in with wing nuts. I am going to try and make it water proof by putting a plastic tub into the bottom 6 inches or so. The inside walls will be tiled and outside will be outdoor carpet. The 3 sides will be bolted down to the bottom piece with a heat pad attached to the bottom plate. The tub will set on top of the heating pad covering (working on avoiding melting). The viewing side will be a piece of plexi that slides up and down locked by a pin slide on both sides. The top will be similar to a box top and bolt on as well. The slide type construction will keep from having gaps where tegu's can escape. Im not to worried about weight. It will break down and can be transported easy. Im working on finding materials for it right now. I want to have everything worked out before i begin construction. It will be 4x2x2 right now. Oz isnt even a year old right now and i figure i can keep him in it till he breaks the 30in mark...
