It depends to each person.
I think that if you made a good check everyday and that you remove all pee, poop and good part of the substrate that touched the nasty stuff and replace it by a new and clean one, I think that 1 time per 3 week is enough. _________________ Ben3233

When our Tegus get up in the morning I let them roam around in the front yard ( on a reptile leash ).They go poddy out side most of the time. Some times they do go in there enclosure.I clean the enclosures about every 3 to 4 weeks ( and I spot clean every time I see some poop in there, too ).I do recommend to use 1 part ( it can be the cheap kind 1 gallon ) vinegar to 5 part hot water to clean the enclosure and rinse it really good.Let it air out for a few minutes because of the fumes and then put the mulch and every thing back in there.Or use a steam cleaner.

Depending on the substrate, but if you're spot cleaning you should not need to change out but once every 6 months.
Agreed. I do it 2 or 3 times a year. There so MUCH of it....spot cleaning will take care of most of the problems. Even after that timeframe, my mulch has NEVER smelled at all. It could probably go even longer. I am currently using 7 large bags of cypress mulch per substrate change, which is a LOT of mulch. It's at least 9" deep across the entire 8x3 foot floor of the enclosure. Let's see that's 24 square feet x .75 feet deep equalling 18 cubic feet of mulch.

I don't want to get things heated up here but I think that is WAY TO LONG with not cleaning the enclosure.Yes,spot cleaning is good but you can just see the poop that is on top but it is hard to get all of the pee out, too. It soaks in to the mulch fast and it spreads out not like poop.
Warner.I don't want to be rude but how can you not smell anything in the enclosure when some of the pee stays in there for SO long ? because when my Tegus poop and pee on the hardwood floor some times the smell almost kills me .

Okay...you said you clean your enclosure once a month. How large is it? How deep is the mulch in it?

I have to agree with Warner, and is questions are right on point. If you're using at least a 4X2 cage and 6" of mulch you can still get away with a total change 2X year. Anthing more is silly, in my opinion.

Until end of this month he is still in a 55 gallon enclosure with 8 1/2" of mulch ( he is still small ) in half of the enclosure.I think it doesn't matter what enclosure a Tegu is in because when a Tegu is in a small enclosure it would be a small Tegu. When the Tegu is in a big enclosure than he would be a big Tegu that means the poop is bigger and the pee is more. Now if you put a small Tegu in a big enclosure than it would be a little different but I still think cleaning the enclosure just twice a year is not enough but every one has the right to do it there way.So if this is what you think is right for your Tegu than go for it.

fingers and toes are crossed.
that would be unbelievable if you can get your hands on that. enclosure / cages all of them are so pricey. I know I am searching and talking to people about having one built or looking for old showcases at places going out of business.
as I am learning these arg. tegus grow like wildfire. yours must be big by now. _________________ 0.1.0 B/W Colombian tegu
