Outdoor Enclosure in SoCal

Hi everyone, can you help give me some advice on building an outdoor enclosure. Kind of like what Bert has, but probably, at a much smaller scale. Please keep in mind that, although I've kept Tegus for many years indoors, I'm a complete retard when it comes to terms such as "fencing,"metal sheets-regarding outdoor enclosures....etc., etc."

I've seen some of the terms used on this site(referring to outdoor enclosures), and was initially intimidated to get into the discussion. So, if anyone can give me some very simple, bone-head instructions on how to build an outside enclosure, I will really appreciate it. I have about a 10f. by 10f area that I can work with. If I'm lucky, it could be 15f by 10. Thank you so much in advance.

welcome to the forum, i have never kept tegu's outdoors but with the weather we have I imagine it would be worth it, we have lot of members here that can help you with an outdoor enclosure, good luck

I just built an outdoor enclosure that is about 9X9. I put Sancho in it, he looked for every possible escape angle and when he could not find a way out, he entered his burrow and has only emerged 1X when the Sun actually showed it's face. I was panicked because he'd not eaten, but was informed this was fine and he was 1) acclimating to his new home and 2) hiding from the "too" cool weather.

If you have any questions as to how I built it send me a note. I'll be posting pics just as soon as the wife give me the camera. Seems a 14 month old kid is more important than a Tegu, sheesh....

I've never built an outdoor enclosure for reptiles, but I have built big outdoor enclosures for ferrets! and trust me, if your ferret can't get out, then nothing can!

Key tip I can give you is dont think the cage is everything above the ground.
You'll want to dig up around your cage to maybe 2-3ft, and fill it in with something solid, or even just wire mesh. That way they can't get out through digging either.

Also, Use wire mesh that cannot be worn away easily, either by animals or weather.
I found that the wire mesh on the bottom of my cage had totally gone.. almost as if it had decomposed.. and they of course, my ferret just dug his way out.. but gave up halfway down the street.

Another thing, make sure you got plenty in there for him, the more he/she is occupied, the less chance of him/her looking for an escape.

Just a few tips.
