i've had my new tegu for 3 days now...the first day i got her i did not interact with her much at all, i put her directly from the box she came in into the cage and watched her explore for a little bit. the 2nd day she was burried in her hide all day....as i expected from being a long time reader of these forums. today a situation came up where i had to dig her up...and i know she was'nt to happy about it....the last thing i want to do is break her trust. i set her out on the carpet and just sat down in the room with her...hopefully to see if she would roam...and maybe even realize that i was'nt any harm to her despite the fact that i dug her up. she really didnt move that much at all. she watched me the entire time and occasionally did push ups when i moved at all. later on i came back into the room and she was basking and so i opened the cage and gently picked her up, she didnt seem to have much of a problem with it. i put her on the ground next to a plate of food, she sat stiff for a while but then to my suprise she ate a little bit. after eating she explored, but did a push up with every step. i let her roam for a little while before leaving her in her cage for the rest of the day. so i guess my question is how should i go about holding her and gaining her trust? i think she is starting to know im not a threat....but you can tell she is still cautious of my presence....

thanks for any replies

woooo! you are going to fast! icon_biggrin.gif

Take your time, after 3 days, I don't think that your Tegu is going to trust you. Of course he/she going to be cautious for the first month.

For the trust question...I think it would be better to not dig to find the tegu.

Glad to hear that your Tegu already eat, its a good thing!...
Now you just have to work with the Taming and trust process!

Good luck! icon_biggrin.gif

thanks icon_biggrin.gif
in no way did i think the tegu was going to trust me in the first 3 days...i was actually expecting her to stay burried for a week or two. i've waited 3 months to get her just to make sure i did my research and knew i was prepared for it. so i know i can have patience for her to get settled. i didnt want to dig her up, but i had a situation with the cage that i had to fix which required getting where she was. i know i invaded her space. thats why i was asking how to go about earning her trust back.

The only way to get his trust back, is to repeat the taming and building trust process.

You just have to restart ! icon_biggrin.gif

Somebody told me that one day, he lost his Tegu Trust(adult one) and it takes 2 month before having it back!

Goodluck! icon_biggrin.gif

I played with my babies right out of the shipping box....no huffing, posturing or tail whipping. I put them in their cage under the lights for a while and got them out again and just sat and played with them for a couple of hours right away.
Guess I was lucky with my 2, but I did ask Rick to send me the sweetest ones he had.

Rick's tegus receive interaction right from hatching...

As for the gaining trust issue:
Get them used to your presence/scent without bothering him. Clean water dish; spot clean enclosure; mist for humidity. If the chance comes for him to lick/smell you, let him, but don't pick him up. This will let him know that you're not a threat.
These guys are a lot smarter than snakes, and this method works with crazy retics, so patience and persistence will pay off.
Chris
