lol, none?

i've never seen another reptile act like a tegu. maybe a savannah with lots of work.

basicly i think a tegus ease of taming is virtually a tegu-only type of thing.

i'd love for someone to prove me wrong.

I was given a wild caught Polychrus acutirostris that was very "tame" right from day one. Also had an amazingly tame Batrachemys tuberculatus given to me, but I have no idea whether it was wild caught or captive reared before it was handed in. Corucia zebrata are frequently quite affectionate, and quite frankly, tegus don't compare at all to Alligator mississippiensis which frequently are described as "dog tame".

Polychrus acutirostris = ?Brazilian Bush Anole?
Batrachemys tuberculatus = Tuberculate Toad-headed Turtle
Corucia zebrata = Monkey tail skinks
Alligator mississippiensis = Mississipi Alligator

As for the tame monitor, I don't think that they have the same Temperament(not the same curiosity level), but can be very tame too like Tegus it will need more time icon_wink.gif

No problem, I am not sure about the Polychrus acutirostris, but the others seems to be the good one! icon_biggrin.gif

I don't know if I understand the last part of Tupinambis post, did he say that Mississipi Alligator were tamer than Tegus? icon_question.gif

Common names are mostly nonsense, I could give you about half a dozen for each of those.

As for the American alligator, yes, FAR tamer than tegus, and they have a greater developed learning center.

What you should be asking for are "potentially" tame animals. It all depends on the keeper and how much effort they are willing to put into their animals.
Here's a list with comments on animals that I have kept over the years, all of which were tame, excellent captives:

Arg B&W tegus - Have 2 now, both excellent (need I say more??)
Water monitor - took a year and a half of patience, but turned into one of the best lizards I've ever kept.
Nile monitor - purchased as hatchling, again with patience he became an excellent captive. Free roaming in the basement, eat from your hand. Yes, a Nile monitor!!
American alligator - again raised from baby (she now resides at my buddy's reptile zoo). Tupinambis is right, these guys are tame when raised properly and hella smart. I gave mine two names, one for handling and one for feeding - totally different animal depending on what you called her.
Dumeril's monitor - good pet, this one never liked handling very much.

I've also kept a number of snakes that have that "bad" reputation, I'll just list them for you. They were ALL excellent pets.

Green anaconda
Yellow anaconda (1 current - tame as anything)
Reticulated python
African rock python

Put in the effort, and I'm positive ANY reptile can be a rewarding pet. I'd love to raise a croc, a croc monitor and a scrub because I've never worked with them before.

Chris

I find that most any reptile can be tamed with enough effort. They will often tolerate attention. I have not found any reptile that was as social as my tegus are. By "social" I mean "actively seeking attention".

I am probably looked at as being biased, but I keep/breed tegus because I have not found anything I liked more.. which is party based on how social they can be.

sorry just never thought of alligators as tame? is that true!! i dont understand how you can consider a wild animal tame. you cant consider dogs tame. a dog could be your best friend, but if you rub it the wrong way it will go wolf on you. obviously a dog is different than a reptile but animals are animals. im liking tegus because they are sociable and thats what has atracted me to them. but i cant imagine that they are as tame as a dog. they are still a reptiles. I havent owned a tegu yet so im new to these guys but if im wrong then im wrong, but tegus are still wild and they must have their wild moments. still i really like these guys!! reallt cool!! altho still are alligators really better tamed then tegus.
