Hello all, jus purchased my golden tegu five days ago, ate well on first day, and has since then. I have handled him every day since day one, but I have to wake him up first, jus likes to hide all the time, but tonight he freaked out and I gently put him back in his enclosure, fed him two crickets with calcium powder, waited for about a half hour, still would not let me pick him up. He's in the middle of shedding right now maybe that has something to do with it. I keep the hot side at about ninety and the cool side about seventy-seventyfive. Any suggestions for a "rookie"? Jus want to raise a good, healthy tegu, I am in love with this guy. (Or girl) I will post some pics soon. Hes about ten inches long

Hi David1977 and Welcome !

Congrats on your new gold colombian tegu ! I do like them and the gold coloration.
my b/w colombian is with me going on 3+ years now and she is my pride and joy.

colombian tegus have a stigma of being 'skittish'. buying a 'skittish' reptile requires alot of patience. building up trust. if you force him (as you said waking him up) you are breaking the trust you need to build with him/her. keep in mind, being a small tegu he/she sees you as a predator. start out by going in his house and cleaning the water dish, misting, feeding and let him/her watch you. allow the tegu to come check you out (and he/she will in time). don't give up on him/her. I know their worth it.

ideal basking temp end 90 - 110 and place the hide box on the cool end at temps 70 - 75.

here are a couple helpful links for you to read:

http://www.anapsid.org/tamingvh.html

http://www.anapsid.org/handlingreptiles.html

the first link talks a little about taming a 'skittish' reptile towards the end.

I hope this helps you and would love to see pics of your baby beauty.
