what kind of hide do you have ? it's a place for them to go to feel safe, sleep perhaps, cool off. they like to dig and burrow in the mulch. my colombian just likes to burrow under all the mulch and makes what looks like a huge nest. lol. my args will go in and out throughout the day and most of the time sleep in there.

I have some unique clay pot from the gardening section at home depot put cypress in there and over it and the args added some mulch and took some mulch away. the way they like it.

it's good to keep the hide moist (not wet) for a good shed.

I had some hides for both of our Tegus in there enclosure and they both didn't use them.So I took them out and they are doing just fine.Just make sure that your mulch is deep and moist ( not wet ) enough so he will not have any shedding problems,

hi erin,

tegus naturally spend much of their lives inside of their burrow and rely on it to be very humid. good shedding and a healthy animal with all of its toes and tail depend on a humid hide box. make sure their is substrate something which will hold moisture without getting moldy inside the hide box i.e. hay.

make small openings.
clay bases to large flower pots, lightly hammer away a portion of the side to make opening
concrete blocks, you can arrange them to make a burrow. just make sure it is stable.
* you want to file down all sharp edges *
even large cat litter boxes, put something on top of it from moving around.

jose2187 a member here has a very good video on hide boxes and how you can make one.

I don't have a hide per se' in Al's enclosure....he just buries himself wherever he wants to hide. He digs tunnels everywhere! This also allows him to hide wherever he wants temperature-wise. And I keep the humidity up high enough so that's not a problem.

I just built a new hid for Sancho. I took a 20qt tub with lid and dug a hole in is enclosure to fit it. I put it in the hole filled it with some dirt and moss, about 1/2 half way. I cut a hole in the lid so he can get in and out and then covered the rest. He went right in, kicked out some of the moss and settled in.
