hi guys how are you all, i hope all is well. so like the topic says i got my first tegu is a hybrid red x blue and i love it they look so sweet. i have just a few questions...how many times should i feed??? how many times a day or week??? i have noticed that since i got him all he has been doing is burring himself into the cypress mulch and stay in there all day is this normal or is there something wrong??? any info will gladly be appreciated and i will have pics of him up soon.
he will bury himself until he feels at home, when he starts to eat you should feed him every day, if its a juvenile, until he is full. That can be tough because they have a wicked appetite. just give the tegu some time to settle in.
yea well its funny you say that cause he ate like an hour after getting him. he ate like 20 crickets like nothing. how soon can i start handling him or should i leave him alone for a while. he is a bit untamed and skittish.
ok kool thanx ben for the info and for welcoming me as well. so i guess i will leave him alone for the remaining time. so how many times a day should i feed him or is it just once a day everyday????

Yes a baby (like yours) should be fed 1 time per day (everyday very important). It's better to feed him at the same time of the day, so the tegu will learn a feeding routine.(feed him until he is full) You don't need to feed him like 3 times a day.
He will need to eat primaly insect and meat, you can start to introduce the fruits.(mix it with the meat) and add some supplement (calcium/d3 and vitamins).
After a couple of week, try to introduce the vegetable (harder work).
Good luck with him! _________________ Ben3233

Hi BOOSTFEEN.Welcome to the Tegu forum family and congrats on your new baby Tegu. You are very lucky that he ate for you on the first day home. Most of the time it can take up to a week for them wanting to eat.It looks to me that he is already pretty comfortable since he ate.I handled both of my Tegus from day one. What I did is I put on two shirts on ( the top shirt should be a dark one ).One is for you not to get scratched up and the other one is for him to hide under.Since you are his hiding place now he will feel save.He also will stay warm from your body heat and he also can smell you. That will help him get to know you faster, too.Mine always got really relaxed when I petted them on there head.Give him some lean ground turkey ( room temps ) with some hard boiled egg ( I recommend to give him just the egg white because mine had gas when he eats the yolk ) and the calcium and vitamine powder. You can see when you should give him the powders in the info that I will post for you.I would feed him every day at least one hour after he basks or two hours before he goes to sleep. But make sure he basks for a while first.Hope that helps.Let us know if you have any more questions.Take care and good luck with him.Oh,or a nother thing you can do is tuck in both shirts and put him in between the shirts and you can walk around the house with him like that and you don't have to worry about him falling and he still gets to hide.I always had mine in the hoody. You can see some of the pictures in my photo gallery. If you want to just click on the gallery button at the end of my post.
wow txrepgirl thank you so much i really appreciate all the help and info you are the best. i will follow all your steps for keeping my tegu healthy and tame. thanx for all the links. i also have a few questions still if nobody minds it seems that i cant keep my humidity above 55%. i am using the same setup that jose2187 is using i spray down the mulch every morning and i also have the habba mist set for every 3 hours with 15 sec intervals it goes up to 70% when i spray down the mulch or when the habba mist sprays down but after an hour or so it goes back down to 55% and is steady at that. any help or info will be appreciated thanx.
