hey guys, first post here. i just got my first tegu today (not first herp tho). the shop didn't know what type he is, just that he's a b&w. i'm posting a pic of him so someone here can tell me icon_smile.gif

also, i'm reading conflicting information on his/her diet, etc. the shop said just give him crickets and mice, but i doubt that is all he will need from what i've read.

also, has anyone heard of feeding them baby food? i knew someone who fed hers hard boiled eggs and baby food. Thanks so much guys!

Dusted crickets, pinkies (baby mice) or any larger mice if it fits (depending on the size of the tegu) and ground turky. Boiled egg is fine but only as a treat not as staple food. I do not recomand using baby food as I dont think the calcium value is high enough.
And I think yours is a colombian or golden (not sure on this)
What is your enclosure setup?
I would recomand using UV lighting and it should be moist enough for this type of tegu.
When someone else can better determin which tegu it is on the picture you can find a better caresheet as not all tegu's are housed and fed in the same way.
And start your taming right away cause I think you have bought a tegu that is not tamed easely, but it can be done with enough effort and patience!

okay thanks! the diet is getting clearer.

he has a "slimline" light. he's only 4 inches without tail so he's in a 20 long until he bulks up, then to a 55, then to a custom tank we'll build. there's "jungle mix" as substrate, basking area, hidey log... yada yada

I dont think thats a gold tegu.. especially if the store told you it was a B&W, my columbian BW babies have the same goldish brown color as yours does, i think eventually it will lose those colors as it gets older and go more to a BW color, some babies are even a greenish color when first born, the colors change easily when they are young. But there is a chance it is a gold, but if the store said its a B&W and you were just wondering what kind of BW it is then its a columbian for sure.

The picture is a little fuzzy so the coloration is a little hard to be specific on, but it is indeed a Colombian tegu. Keep in mind, the Colombian Black Tegu and the Colombian Gold-Phased Black Tegu are the same, T.teguixin so there really is only on difference; the coloration.
