Hey everyone, I'm planning building my little girl Alice a permanent home over the summer, It's going be a 8'x4'x4' but i may change height later on we'll see.

I plan on building it the same as RehabRalphy did in his tutorial but I'm not sure if it will be able to hold me, another cage, and if my girlfriend comes over for us to lay on the bed together to watch TV so i want a cage that will be able to hold at least 400lbs on top of it without any bowing or even worse breaking. What could i do to make sure the cage is strong enough to hold the weight? Do you think it can hold it fine already?

Should i just add a few more supports? Also i don't plan on using the caster wheeling.

Also heres a link for the tutorial - http://www.tegu.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=102

Thanks,
Spencer

badass idea, i'd say without looking at your tutorial 4"x4" beams for the four corners, thick crossbeams on the top and real wood for the top.

talk about a space saver!

matress sizes:
queen size: 60x80
double: 54x75
Twin/Single 39×75
King 76×80

Looks like I'm gonna have to stick with my twin then icon_sad.gif LOL I was planning on 4x4's on the corners and possibly lateral bracing on the roof. What do you mean by "real" wood? I was planning on plywood I'm just not sure what thickness to use like for example either 1/4 or 1/2....

Thanks,
Spencer

def go half inch, try and double up on your supports on the 8 foot sides. also, more slats across the top will make it much sturdier. as for the real wood comment, i think he means no plywood/pressboard, as a real grain wood will be much sturdier. i think u can get away with using half inch, maybe 5/8s as long as its well slatted.

i think u can pull it off, just remember, with the mattress on top, its gonna act as insulation so make sure theres good ventilation, preferably adjustable, so you can control the heat displacement

i'm not exactly a handyman, but yea, i've seen too much particle/pressboard warp and sag especially when the weight distribution on top (you) will be moving around and the other side is seeing soo much humidity and heat. i'd say use 8' gorrilla glued hardwood planks. or something similar.

Plywood is going to warp the most. As the wood dries out it will contort itself because the grain is continuous. OSB won't have that problem, however your really going to have to plan this out because once you build it, your going to have a tough time time moving it, or getting rid of it, etc. Your probably going to have to build it in the room in question, which may lead to other problems, mainly structural depending on how the house was built and other things you would of never thought of when planning these things out.

I plan on making it all in my bedroom and then painting it with Exterior Acrylic House Paint and then just caulking the edges. The only thing I'm worried about is the fumes from caulking/painting. I don't think theres going to be any sag with a support every foot on the top and 2 supports on the back and the bottom is built the same way as the top.
