this week i have been harassing angelrose with my being a tegu noob as i prepared to go to F.I.R.Expo today and after much reading i think i got a good female at the show, squirmy and bright-eyed, but not a single show of aggression while i held her right through until she calmed and certainly nothing like the inmate hanging out over on SR436
Maria was also telling me that you go to Daytona and of some of the breeders to look for while there, i have been going for 5 years now and plan to be there again among the opening morning line, but i've never been looking at tegus, (strangely, the first time i went there only looking for tarantulas, thousands of herp happy people waiting and i was there for bugs!)
anyway getting back to something more pressing, i got concerned today when i had 2 different vendors (neither of which dealt in tegus i might add) at the show today, tell me that i needed a permit for giant tegus, i was not aware of any regulations on these guys and after visiting your site, i thought you must know the ins and outs of the local FWC definitively
have i overlooked something or have these vendors contracted the dreaded pet bazaar know-it-all syndrome? _________________ 0.1 Giant Tegu

You only need a permit for tegus if plan to exhibit them or sell them to the public (as a breeder). Actually, that goes for all reptiles in FL, not just tegus. _________________ Laura R (FL)

who even knows, half those guys had no business card
the only reason that i gave them any merit was because they were selling other herps i knew were on the ROC list so they must have been in contact with Florida FWC in the past 6 months or so and i am no expert on the new rules, last year at this time i could have bought a 20ft python and the only question asked was "cash or credit?" and now i'd have to jump through rings of fire standing on my head
from what i understand the only lizard on the list is the nile monitor and i have never had any interest in them anyway
for the foreseeable future and until the gov't decides whats best for me in regards to reptiles, i will remain just a small time keeper with no intent to show or distribute so i am glad the obtrusive paperwork doesn't apply to me... yet _________________ 0.1 Giant Tegu

yes my timing in joining this forum was not coincidence, i was planning on getting a tegu at the show if it seemed to be well started and showing good signs of vitality and there was one, just one, but it fit the mold of what i was looking for (some of my best finds are from vendors that don't normally deal in the species they have up for sale, i have a dumeril's boa that is now approaching 8ft and still has its bright juvenile colors and a stripe knee tarantula that was so emaciated it was marked at $12 yet sold to me for the $4 i had left, not only did that shrunken body turn out to be of the much longer lived female persuasion, but some 4 years later she is one of my most ferocious eaters and looking strong)
i will get pics of my tegu up here shortly, i will need to show my best friend first, living in Australia she lives among scalies i would sign over my bank account for and she just calls them pests

It was a great show! I bought a new little beardie (why? I have 6 adults and 14 babies!) and won an ameiva in a trivia show! Bwahaha! My husband kept saying, "Get the umbrella, I need an umbrella." They said that they had 14 prizes and one was a live animal. All I knew was that it was a lizard and likely a teiid or monitor, so I waited until the end to guess. Now what am I going to do with an ameiva?
You are correct, the only lizard on the ROC list is the Nile Monitor. There is some talk down in S.FL about getting the Green Iguana added, but the FWC isn't going for it.
Ran into the PB guys there. They really are a great group and I didn't mention them by name before because I didn't want to disrespect the shop. They really are the best rep store in the area. _________________ Laura R (FL)

but yes FIRE is the best show in Orlando i have to support shows here or they go away, i stayed from opening until just after the guys from Glades were doing everything in their power to get that king cobra to bite them in the face for the camera, crazy
i was not certain which the ameiva was so i looked it up and that didn't help since it seems there are dozens of variations of lizards called that
when i was talking about that tegu at Pet Bazaar before i wasn't saying it is a bad shop, that was part of what made it stand out because as you mentioned earlier, their stuff is usually nice, i'm always staring at the arboreal snakes and the elaborate setups they have put together
i don't know them like you do, but i have no plans to stop going there for caging supplies just because of that tegu
and the reason i thought you didn't mention the name is because noone on here is local and wouldn't know what you were talking about even if you did say
i don't think they have a website but they do have the next best thing

Well, both reasons. I know you're not slammin them either. Everyone loves them. Yeah, that tegu is really out of character for them. I've asked them about a website, but the owner isn't interested in spending the $$ and they don't want to ship reptiles anyway.
I don't think it is an ameiva after all. I think it's a male blue whiptail. Glades Herp...those guys are nuts! My husband is talking to them about switching my gator for another baby (sniff, sniff). That's where we get our gators.
I WAS saving my money for Daytona, but I spent about $300 anyway. It was $150 on frozen mice, $40 on insects, $50 to get in (family) and parking, $40 beardie, $15 iguana/beardie food...oh well! _________________ Laura R (FL)

Well, as a U of F sort-of alum (finished at UCF), you should be concerned about gators!!
This particular gator is really grouchy. Now, I think all gators are grouchy. He's a nice size, about 2ft, but my hubby wants to keep little babies. My educational programs are hands-on, and he's too big for little kids to hold right now. He also lives in a 75 gallon in my living room. If he outgrows that, we would have to move him outside. Since I live in a subdivision in Longwood, that presents a problem and draws too much attention to what I actually have living in my house! _________________ Laura R (FL)
