ok i went and bought Zoo Med Eco Earth Compressed Coconut Fiber Expandable Substrate today and i need to know if its bad to use and your opinion on it in tegu use

It's ok to use that but I still would mix it with some save mulch.Please make sure that you don't let this coconut fiber dry out to much ( or have it to wet.Just moist to the touch ) because Oreo will breath in that dust and it's not good for him to do that.Also please make sure that you don't only just spray the top every day but also stir it up.What I do is one day I mist down the entire mulch and stir it up.The next day I just spray the top.The next day I just stir it up and than start from the beginning.Hope that helps.

Hello teguman1. I will offer this. This advice came from a tegu breeder. He told me not to use the coconut fiber. He said that since they are burrowing animals, they can and do get tiny slivers from the fiber in the corners of their mouth that need to be flushed out. He said that if not, flushed out, they could cause infections.
On the other hand, the guy that actually sold me the tegu, said that it would be ok to use cocunut fiber and he uses it with monitors, I believe. He is also a knowledgeable reptile person.
All I know is that when I was shopping for subtrate right before I got my tegu. By some form of luck, there was a tegu breeder who over heard me talking about getting one. He saw that I had bags of the coconut fiber and said, I don't think that you should use that. He brought me back to the isle and handed me a bag of cypress mulch. He said this is what you need to use. You can get it here or at Home depot. He also said to make sure that I got him eating mice as soon as possible.
I am just sharing advice that was told to me. I do not know for sure about things I have not tried. I have never used coco fiber for reptiles.
Your welcome angelrose and txrepgirl. I always share information that I have learned, especially from vets and breeders. Tegus need all the care that they can get. Especially since they seem prone to problems, more than other reptiles.
I am always looking for new information as well. However, I have realized that sometimes you can't rely on certain sites on the internet..or even certain care practices on labels of supplements etc....
For example, the T-rex calcium witrh vitamin D supplement recommends that you use their supplement wqith every feeding for your animal. Do you know how much D3 that would be... It would be toxic......

Probably. However, why on earth would you be a reptile company and say somethigng that could really hurt a reptile. From a business stand point, I mean, wouldn't they think that advice like that could lead to reptiles declining and health and people saying...man, Don't use T REx products, my animal got really sick on them. All along they don't realize that it was the over use of the product, not anything else. Seems like, in the long run, not a smart business idea.
