Hello all. Today, I noticed a small, what looks to be a scratch on my tegues upper lip area. I am not completley sure it is a scratch. Sorry, no pics. Lately, he has been trying to get out of his tank and he pushes and bangs into the screen top. So much so that he knocks a light dome over.

Anyway. I am going to wait about 2 days and see how it progresses. It could be just a smeared blood mark from the mice that he ate today.

The question I have is...what can and should you use if it does get infected or just preventative...... I mean, there tongues keep coming out, so if you try to swab the area, the tegu will keep licking the disinfectant, which cannot be good. I mean, I was trying to rub it off with a paper towel today and he just kept lickign the paper towel. Also, is this something that should be taken care of by a vet.

i doubt it'll get infected, if your worried, just use a bit of hydrogen peroxide to disinfect, it's tongue-safe.

just another beauty mark. my girls got a few as well.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it too much. You can put a little Neosporin ointment on it, the small amount you use wouldn't be harmful if ingested.

Thanks worldeater and laurarfl. It is still there today, however, it seems to look a little better. It is a very superficial mark, not deep at all and looks more like a very small scratch with a small scrape.

I will wait a couple more days and see how it goes. For now, I have been rinsing it off with fresh water 1-2 times a day.

If necessary, I will try the neosporin or the hydrogen peroxide. I called the vet today, actually for a frog related issue, but I mentioned the tegu. She recommended neosporin. She said that they use it on dogs and other animals and they lick it all up and it seems fine. Thanks again

Well, today I bought neosporin and q-tips. The scratch/scrape seemed to be looking quite a bit darker, probably from scabbing, but I didn't like the way it looked. I got home with the neosporin and was all set to use it when low and behold, the wound was completely healed. It must have healed up and I think he shed some skin off his mouth area. I was relieved to see his upper lip looking 100% again.

The thing that bothered me was the placement. He burrows quite a bit and his upper lip would constantly be pushed into the mulch. However, everything is fine now.

icon_biggrin.gif I'm happy to hear that every thing is well now. When it comes to him nocking over the light I recommend using a shower curten rod ( like I used one in this video ) that way if he nocks it over again and your not at home nothing can catch on fire or the light buld will not brake. It happend to us one time.Leonidas nocked over the light and it fell on my boyfriend's CD case.It started to smell really bad ( burned ).I asked him what that smell was and I started to look around and the CD case was melting icon_lol.gif .

The old school way. With clear duct tape icon_lol.gif ( I grew up in a military life stile. So when I have to fix something that's what I'm going to use.Just good old plane duct tape icon_wink.gif icon_lol.gif ).I know that they sell those stands at the store but they are so expensive and when we are going to put them in they're new enclosure they will not use those stands any more.

Yeah, lights can be scary. We had a pet sitter come in while we were on vacation. He said the light got knocked off the uro cage 'somehow'. Honestly, it just can't happen. I think he placed it on the carpet and forgot to put it back on the cage. Then he left and came back two days later. He said the whole house smelled like smoke. When we came home, the carpet had been burned all the way through the padding. I am SOOOO grateful my house didn't catch fire and I didn't lose everything.

Yeah, Kreacher always leaps at the lid and I worry about her knocking the light over (in her old cage). In this instance, this little uro would be have to be a magician to have got that over and then landing perfectly on the floor, LOL!
