I mentioned that I just bought a leash for Lady. I was excited with the intent of having her around and out of the enclosure more. Well my babies little head is still to small for the leash so I guess I must wait
I also grabbed some mealworms to try. She does not like them. She is so picky.... I tryed to give her some mealworms separate and she did not even look at them... I even put them with some new pinkies I thought she would like. She ate only half the pinky and no mealworms. I am running out of ideas for her meals. She will not eat fruits. She will not eat crickets. I feel like I work as a chef all I need is a little white towel to throw over my arm.....
As far as crickets and mealworms, if your tegu has never eaten them they may not know they are food. Try boiling an egg, mash 1/2 the egg up and mix in some crickets and mealworms. Your tegu will likely eat it, then use less egg next time, and then less again.. soon they will be eating mealworms and crickets.

If you decide to put your picture on this site somewhere let me no, I'll hang it above her enclosure. Everyday when she gets up me and lady will bow four times and light candles..... no really thanks for the advice. I was part of another Tegu community but always felt like I was the expert. As you can see from the questions I ask I am faaaaaarrrrrr from being an expert. Its nice to be able to get intelligent knowledgable answers. Thx Rick I will keep everyone updated.
I saw one of those large leashes in a store near me, and there was no way my tegus legs would fit through the holes Maybe I should investigate further, as it did look pretty small - perhaps someone had switched them round in the packaging or something.

Your tegus will actually get into those things? they look way better then typical 'dog harness' types, but I didn't figure I would be able to get chief to cooperate enough to get into one of those.

I had never thought about leashing up my tegu but it sounds interesting. The petstore up here carries Iguana harnesses do you think that would work for a tegu?

Charlene I did grab the ig leash it will fit eventually one side fits perfect the otherside is alittle to loose so thats why I said I would wait. But she should start to fit shortly the way she is growing...... The reason for the hareness is ladys fear of a lot of people. I can not keep avoiding having her around people. So with the leash and some training, I am hoping I can make the hareness a sort of security blanket for lady. I started out buying a very destinctive color so she has already started associating leash with outside her enclosure, every time I walk up with the leash she starts to react.
Well to update the egg with the mealworms flunked the Lady test Rick. She touched neither, I gave her egg with the mealworms in it at around 7am I finally got home at 11pm and she had not touched a thing but was not happy with Daddy at alllllll she was up waiting like an upset parent
So at 11:00pm I had to make her a special meal when I put the dish in she gobbled it right up... how picky is that!!!!
The Vet says I spoil her but how can you not spoil her if she only eats what she prefers. Tough customer.
I often read about owners able to give fruit Lady will not even look at fruit. They say that pets take on the charateristic of their owner in cases. Well we are both picky and conavors
She also does not PREFER the frozeen pinkies. I guess my next question to the community is : Does anyone else have a Tegu with a preference for something wierd in their diet Something new I might try.
Actually, for those people wishing to leash their lizards, I have better suggestions. Those reptile harnesses and such, as a rule, are junk unless your lizard fits them perfectly. Go to your local pet shop and ask for a figure 8 harness for cats. I find the one's with buckles to make two loops don't work well, you need to get the ones that form an "8" with a single piece of material. A good figure 8 harness loops over the back of the neck, crosses across the sternum of the chest, and then comes back together over the shoulders. Because of its design, it provides a snug fit that holds the animal without choking, and is ideally suited for animals with a lot of lateral undulation.

I have never looked into the figure 8 style harnesses, but I will next time I am at the local petshop. I do use the reptile harness I linked to and it worked fine for me when training my tegus, but now the tegus I take out all free roam at the park. This is after long periods of harness training inside and outside to make sure the tegu was comfortable and not going to run away.
I took my tegu out on a leash for the first time today, and it left him worn out (which is probably a good thing, as he is still needing to drop a little more weight). He took to it surprisingly well; having seen that the large harness was too small for his huge legs, I used my sisters old rabbit harness which is two adjustable loops, one for neck and one for waist, with a strip joining them together. He didnt fuss at all when I put it on, though he shook his head a couple of times, and wandered around quite happily on the grass and places where hes not usually allowed (he moves way too fast to let him on the grass where there are bushes and other places of escape). It also meant that he could wander the patio more fully, which I think may have helped dull his nails a little. Plus, he pooed on the grass rather than in his cage! Hurrah!
Im looking forward to the height of summer when I will hopefully be able to take him out and about properly
