Greetings! My B&W tegu has arrived from Agama International!

I posted this up on Reptile Forums but I thought you guys would also enjoy. Please also see my post about my custom enclosure: http://thetegu.com/postp6965.html#6965

JULY 21 2005
-----------------

The tegu is here! Wooot! My buzzer went off at 10:15am and I went downstairs to greet the UPS man who was holding a small box! I brought it upstairs to my apartment and I was thinking the whole time ... this doesn't even say LIVE ANIMAL or anything. It just says, "Avoid Extreme Heat" that is if you can read Bert's (from Agama International) handwriting *grin*

I carefully opened the box and inside there was this piece of foam and a small tupperwear container. And I saw something moving around ... So I pulled the lid off ... !

Hey! There's a tegu in there! A beautiful green hatchling! So cute!!! He looked like he wanted to crawl out so I carefully picked him up and held him in my hand. He seemed just fine with it and he flicked his tongue out a bit at me and crawled around for a few moments.

He's so soft! I put him in his nice new CONDO *grin* And I went back to get the camera and he had already buried himself. I can see him moving around underneath the substrate though. Maybe he will peek out later and I can take a picture. I hope he likes his new home.

I noticed when I opened the lid of the enclosure it was SO HOT. The temperature is about 85. I guess that is ok right? (according to mcfreshdeli) however my humidity is low. I watered the substrate and I have a waterfall running and also one of those tricking water bowls also. How else should I try and maintain humidity?

He hasn't surfaced for a while ... I hope he is ok down there ...

Very cute little tegu. Misting is the best way to keep the humidity up in the tank. Some people also use a humid hide box but I don't care for that method personally. Also you might want to lose the waterfall...they are germ magnets and a real pain in the butt to clean. Also as your tegu gets bigger he'll probably just tip the whole thing over and make a big mess.

Awesome post. I love to see posts that are so detailed and full of cheer! icon_smile.gif

As far as the waterfall, I agree they can be bad. They are hard to clean well, but it is possible. I have however heard of one person whose hatchling crawled up inside the waterfall (not sure how this happened) and got stuck. Luckily they were able to get it out safely by cracking the waterfall open.

Congrats on the hatchling and I suggest that you keep weekly/bi-monthly records of age, size, weight, and any other data you care for. It's awesome to be able to look back on. And if everyone does this when they get a hatchling (and know the DOB) then we can actually create a really good growth rate chart. (Here's a simple example)

Keep us updated.

Rick

i just received my new baby argentina from bert too! i got him yesterday morning!

sry these pics were taken with a camera phone so they kinda suck...

he's so adorable! my boyfriends little brother named him Teto
Teto the tegu.. lol i think its kinda wierd for a name but hey i couldnt think of one, so it works.
i have a multi-level cage, the lights are on the top level, and food/water is on the bottom. but since the baby is soooo little he cant go down the steps yet. so i put the food on top and i hold him while he drinks outta the water. it actually doesnt bother him. he's a little squirmy when i pick him up, but he settles right down. he's so awesome

i think keeping a chart is a great idea! im gunna start doing that from now on.

hey techrev, do you know what day/date exactly berts (agama international) hatchlings were born? i dont really remember, and i wanna write it down.

Morbid

I emailed Bert on July 11th to ask how the hatchlings were and he said that the first 50 were born 5 days earlier. So you and I most likely got two out of that first batch. He said he waits two weeks before shipping the hatchlings so that should give you a date to start from.

I havent seen mine since I put him in the enclosure. He completely buried himself into the substrate. He came out for a minute or so to lay on the heat pad but then he was gone again. I haven't been able to really handle him but Bert said to not try so soon.

So hopefully he'll surface tomorrow. How is yours?

techrev, mine is doing great. when i first received mine, i just let him roam around the box that he came in with my other tegu *digger* and got him used to seein digger and me . then i put them both in the cage and watched him eat and petted him a little. digger layed next to him and would kinda hiss when i got to close to the new little guy. they both went under a hide and just layed there and went to sleep. i think you should just try holdin him for like 5 minutes every hour. thats what i do try to do. whenever i look into the cage, and he sees me, he will come out and stare at me until i take him out. he's so perfect. but i hardly ever see digger. i see him a little more now since i got another one in there. digger is kinda protective of my new one. so sometimes i see them sitting together, but most of the time digger is hidden. so i think it just depends on their personality.

so im guessing the hatchlings were born on the 6th. im pretty sure we got ours outta the same bunch.

Morbid

When I first got mine and took him out of the box he was just fine. I held him for a bit and he wandered around the kitchen counter. But once he was in the enclosure, if I reach for him he just takes off and hides. I think if I chase him around it will really stress him out so I'm not sure if I should or not. I will try and catch him again today.

I think my lights are also too hot which is why he is buried most of the time. I will turn some of them off and see if that helps.

Also how are yours with feeding. Mine seens to hate everything I put in there. Drop me an email would you? techrev@juno.com would love to talk with you.

yea, but i think techrev's is just as nice looking as mine!
they are both adorable!!!

its kinda hard to see in the pictures, but mine has a really nice dark head, especially right on the top. so im hoping it will have a black head when its an adult. i've always wanted one with a full black head! i think they are amazing!

thats what i was hoping...i've been searching everywhere for a black head, and since its a hatchling, you cant really tell if its gunna have a black head or not. so if it doesnt, then in the near future i might actually buy yet another tegu, but one that is older and for sure has a black head.
i currently have 2 tegus, both argentina's...1 juvie from lllreptile and 1 hatchling from bert...
i really wanna buy a blue and albino too. but i cant afford those right now.
i think in the next few years i might have about 5 tegus! im gunna be broke icon_lol.gif
