due to space restrictions, i decided not to get rid of my 6 ft aquarium, i have decided to start out with a warf tegu, an ameiva or maybe a chilenan dwarf
i will covert my 4x2x2 aquarium into a viv and i'm wondering what species would be best
something that climbes a little maybe. the tank will be about 2.5 to 3 foot high as i can only modify the front for a vent. the 2nd vent has to be above the glass and i hate to waste that space.
not exactly a tegu but a start in the rite direction. _________________ uli

I had 2 Ameivas, however a co-worker adopted one from me as I needed to split them up as one was showing signs of being a male and did not need no more lizards. I kept the larger of the 2, a female and she makes a great pet. As far as species from what I gather there is somewhere in the neighborhood of 30.
I have what is considered to be the common Ameiva, or Ameiva ameiva - has also been referred to as Red-Tailed. Care for the Ameiva is basically the same as care for the Tegu, so if your on this forum the answers are there.
They can be very hyperactive, liking to climb, jump, ect... - They can also be very calm and do like human contact - neither of the 2 has ever attemted to bite me - Again like a mini Tegu, they make a fine pet.

that way i can get more experience til i'm ready for tegus one day.

i currently keep 3 tiger ameivas ( Ameiva Festiva) in a 4' x 2' x 2' cage though i have had up to 5 in that enclosure, though separation of males was needed. Most care sheets on Ameivas are rather generalized and vague. Mine love to dig and I provide as deep substrate as i possibly can, and they do climb occasionally (some species more than others)
