I have never heard a tegu purr. I would keep an eye on him for a respiratory infection. One other person has mentioned a purring sound, you can read that post here..
i guess purring isn't the proper way of describing the sound, it sounds almost like a quiet burp, and I can clearly see the tegu make that sound from its throat. This doesn't happen oftern, only when I scratch/ rub its chin
I spoke to a local herpetologist, and he said it may be a submissive sound that the tegu makes when its relaxed.
