Hi, I am going to be getting an argentine B/W tegu soon, building the cage now 8/3/3, i am sure this question has been asked many times just wondering about problems people have had with substrate such as, cypress, eucalyptus, orchard bark, are the big ones i hear that people use but i am wondering what molds fast, what happens when certain kinds react to water, and what is best for a smaller tegu, thanks

Pat,

Welcome to the site.

Cypress mulch is the most commonly used. I have never seen it mold or break down. Keep is humidy and mist daily and you will be fine.

I have never seen cypress mulch available here in the UK, so I use orchid mulch. I too have never seen it mold up or anything; as a matter of fact, I think its one of the few wood-based substrates that dont. icon_smile.gif However, mine did come with an infestation of ants, which is an absolute nightmare to deal with at the moment.

Ants are no problem as long as you find a reliable way to rid yourself of them without toxic chemicals..

I'd suggest the safest route, which is probably getting one of these...

I would worry about it getting eaten and causing the tegu to become impacted. I would use something tried and true like cypress mulch or a variety of other mulch substrates that are known to work well.
