Reptile Specific products are to price inflated. I can get a HUGE bag of mulch for 1/20th or less the price! I'll stick to Cypress mulch! _________________ John Light

I buy huge sacks of orchid mulch from my local lizard store - its not a brand like zoo-med or t-rex, so its a LOT cheaper (you end up paying for the brand name most of the time rather than the product actually being any better). It holds moisture relatively well, but needs misting at least every other day to keep it from getting dusty.

I've only used two commercial brands the repti-bark and that expandable substrate.
The repti-bark is good but way to expensive. The exo-terra earth isn't on your list but I will warn you about it anyways. My tegu was having a horrible time shedding (which in turn made me feel horrible). Tried every trick in the book, bought all the expensive products, took him to the vet, ect. Finally I removed the substrate temporarily and replaced it with paper towel and he shed (This was after 2 1/2 months of stuck shed). Still working on his toes and tail but he got much better. Never going to use it again.

One possible issue you can run into with expandable or fine particle substrates are that when they dry they can clump. If this occurs on the feet and you do not monitor this closely your tegu could loose circulation and, in the end, it's toes.
