hello tegukeepers,
I read a lot about feeding and everybody said/says: don't handfeed or don't let your tegu associate your finger/hand (body odor) with food!
this is absolutely logical! handfeeding is waiting for trouble!
so, i thought up my own feedingmethod.
i build a box and placed it against the maincage. also i places a bicycle bell on the feeding box and i placed a little green lamp inside, on the roof of the enclosure.
when i placed food in the feeding box, i ring the bell and turn on the green lamp. Than i put up the slide up and the tegu can go into the box.
green lite + bell = feeding time
no lite + bell = no feeding
green lite + no bell = no feeding
no lite + no bell = keep sleeping little tegu!
When i ring the bell, the tegu knows it already (after a small week) that it is feeding time. if she seeing the light i don't know (i didn't thinks so... not yet!)

That is a good idea. Kudos!
I have to feed on the floor still because I need to separate the tegus while they eat to avoid feeding responce aggression as they try to get the food before another does. Even the less aggressive (feeding responce agression) ones can accidentally bite another tegus tail, tongue or toes, but that is a neat idea. It takes my clicker training one step further and reinforces how smart and quick learning tegus are.

Like Rick said it sounds like a good idea for someone with one tegu in the enclosure. Right now I feed on the floor as well because my tegu doesn't fit in his feeding box anymore. I might give your idea a try though, it would be interesting to see if it works.

I really like this idea. I'm going to carry on feeding outside the cage, at least for now, becuase I enjoy the interaction, and can keep an eye on my two. I like th bicycle bell idea though. I often have to feed mid-evening, after my tegs are asleep. To wake them up I spray the tank with tepid water, and they know its feeding time, but they don't always wake up, so a bell would be a good idea!
I was working on a similar thing with my savannah monitor, except without any signals. She knows that she'll be fed after a bath, most of the time I just put the food in before I even replace her, so she gets her nails done, a quick rinse, and dinner ready and waiting when she's out.

Also trying to figure out some way to work with my Monkey Skink... as smart as she is, she knows that she can just nibble on her pothos whenever she's in need of a snack, and whenever I come around and bring her around, afterwords she always gets a tray of fruits.
Now I just need to work on a method of paper training her.. this liquid urine is really starting to urk me.. It's just dark juice, and actually has a sweet, albeit, a sickly sweet smell, but nonetheless.. I've had her go on my lap in shows before without problem, it's just a mess.. really wish I knew someway to go about it, it's not like I can make her hold it in unless I set about feeding her a lot of fiber, but that would only make the feces bigger.. ugh.

Anyways, about the light.. I haven't read any great analysis on it.. I know for a fact they see white and blue light pretty well... Green, I can guess so.. the only thing I know they have trouble with is red light which is why it's often used as a night light.
